introduction to New Forest bed & breakfast in Brockenhurst

Escape to this charming 17th century foresters cottage set in the heart of the pretty Victorian New Forest village of Brockenhurst. In Mar 07 this B&B was the only five star  B&B in the New Forest.

The lodge was constructed from recycled ships timbers, hand made bricks from local clay and sand in 1650. It has been sympathetically extended during its 350 year history using reclaimed roof tiles, local wood and hand made bricks.

Our cooked breakfast comes from the forest and travels no more than 10 miles to reach us. Our water comes from local springs. We send as many jars and bottles back to the manufacturer as possible.

When reburbishing rooms we try and reuse, recycle and source locally. The only exceptions are mattresses (all interior sprung mattresses are less than 12 months old March 2007) and bedding (All pillows and duvets are new for each season). Both are sourced from UK manufacturers as close as possible.

You are welcome to join us in keeping the impact low too. If you arrive by train (five minutes walk to the station of Brockenhurst) or you leave your car in the car park for the day we will be happy to offer you tea and cakes with our compliments to say thank you for reducing the pollution in our lovely forest. Guest are also welcome to switch off the low energy lights and their tv when not in the rooms.

how this holiday makes a difference
Our accommodation has been awarded 'Gold' on the Green Tourism Business Scheme.

In 2007 we have won 3 awards: The Sustainable Business of the Year "South East – TSE" award, the Brilliance in Business "Best Use of Local Produce" award, and were highly commended in the Green Hotel of the Year "Caterer & Hotelkeeper" award.

We actively support local farmers and the local economy by purchasing as many of our products as possible from producers carrying the New Forest Marque. The New Forest Marque is only given to producers who satisfy the scheme’s requirements for sourcing ingredients from within the New Forest. We actively encourage children from the local school, from brownies and cubs visit our property to learn about local produce.

We do tastings with local children to introduce them to the delights of local foods. The owner, Christina Simons, goes into the local primary school to share her thoughts and experiences of local produce with the children.

Christina also does cooking demonstrations using local ingredients at the New Forest Show both live on radio and in front of a live audience. Christina is also an active member of the team developing local produce around the forest and hosts meetings of the committee. As chair of the hotels group she trying to make environmentally friendly information available to as many hoteliers in the forest as possible. The B&B is powered with Green Energy with low evergy light bulbs throughout. We have a recycling policy in place and have reduced portion packs in bedrooms by using 330ml bottles. Towels and sheets changed every three days and are washed with Ecover products.

We encourage our guests to use the local village (we give them a map of the village on arrival and encourage them to use it). We have local menus in our Snug Bar to encourage guests to use local restaurants. By visiting us through Responsible Travel you are helping us define the size of the market. This helps other hoteliers identify how many customers care about the environment.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
