how this holiday makes a difference
|
This resort is committed to what we have been doing for the past twenty five years – being good neighbours by providing meaningful and worthwhile employment, livelihood and training opportunities to the local communities; being faithful stewards of the natural environment.
The forests on the ancient limestone cliffs on Lagen Island that have been home to over 110 bird species, fifteen of them endemic only to Palawan, have been preserved by the resorts' environmentally friendly practices and guest activities. Guests have been treated to sightings of Palawan Hornbills, Palawan Shamas, and many others in their natural environment. Lagen Island was also the site of the first ever Philippine Cockatoo Translocation Project which aimed to re-introduce previously captive, extremely endangered Philippine Cockatoos to the wild, in the hope of re-stocking their population. The Resort continues to monitor the birds that were released in November 2006. To minimize the use of disposable plastic water bottles, El Nido Resorts recently implemented its “refillable drinking water system”.Instead of giving complimentary bottled water, each room is provided with a refillable flask which is replenished for every nights stay. In addition, an El Nido Be GREEN water bottle, with unlimited refill, is also on sale at the resorts and beach clubs. This will reduce the purchase of bottled water during activities and meals whilst in El Nido.Aside from being cost-efficient, this new system aims to reduce negative environment impact of having to disposable empty water bottles which, more often than not, end up in landfills. The resort has also been the steward of a successfully maintained and protected giant clam garden. In all, these are but a fitting legacy to the first resort in the country to have undergone an environmental impact assessment and continue to successfully implement its stipulations. Island Transvoyager (ITI), El Nido Resorts’ official flight provider, recently launched “Be Green, Fly Green”, the first airline carbon emission reduction program in the Philippines. ITI established a seedling nursery at El Nido Airport to offset the carbon emissions from its flights and greenhouse gases from its aircrafts’ fuels. Passengers interested to offset their carbon footprint out of their flights to and from El Nido may sponsor tree-planting by purchasing seedling/s from ITI. For enquiries, visit www.itiair.com or call 63-2- 8515674. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
