introduction to Kalkan village accommodation, Turkey

Enjoy a stay in a genuine Turkish village in an area of outstanding natural beauty at our Islamlar Kalkan accommodation.

The old stone cottage is an original home just a short walk down a quiet lane from the centre of the village and 8 km from Kalkan, set in a vineyard with views of the sea. The guest room is separate from the main house with its own private garden.

It has been decorated in traditional Turkish style with local earthenware pottery and hand loomed Anatolian kilims and weavings a feature. It offers you the opportunity of enjoying Turkish village life first hand. At the same time you are only a stone’s throw from Kalkan and Kas and other fascinating small coastal towns.

There are many interesting anthropological sites to visit and beautiful deserted beaches. Islamlar, or Bodamya as it was once known, is known for its lush green gardens and was previously of mixed Turkish and Greek race. It is famous for its water powered stone mills that are still in use. The village makes its own tahini from locally grown sesame seeds. Every week the local women get together and make yufta, a natural flat bread made on an open fire from the stone milled flour. The views of the sea are breathtaking. It is a fascinating area of great natural beauty. The village also has trout farms using the natural water that springs fresh from the mountain. There are several very good local restaurants serving trout, village bread and home made cheese.

You are also perfectly situated at this Kalkan accommodation for making day trips to fascinating places, such as Xanthos and Saklikent. Also there are unspoiled beaches to enjoy. In addition to the charming local restaurants, a wide variety of eating places offering international and local cuisine are available in Kalkan and Kas. Live Turkish music is also available in town.

  • how this holiday makes a difference
This Kalkan accommodation offers you the opportunity to stay in the heart of a beautiful Turkish village in an old stone cottage that has been carefully renovated using natural materials to preserve its original features and to remain in harmony with the environment. The cottage has been restored using locally produced, recyclable materials to blend in with the village architecture. It was converted using local craftsmen which benefits the community financially. The village carpenter also made some of the furniture.

You will be able to get to know the friendly local people and see how they live. We collaborate with local people to organise visits to out of the way places. All guests are encouraged to use local shops and markets and eat in the trout restaurants in the village. Our breakfasts include home made bread made from locally milled flour.

Scenery, Turkey cottage accommodationIt is the owners policy to use local produce. We grow organic vegetables and have grapevines, figs, olives, quince and a wide variety of fruit trees that we look after organically with the help of Ahmet a local gardener, who also helps with maintenance jobs. Plumbing is maintained by Mehmet since we have a simple system piped from a mountain source.

We recycle our waste to make compost and help feed the chickens. We keep chickens and ducks for free range eggs and meat. We encourage bird life in the garden and have bird boxes. We leave some areas uncut to preserve wild flowers. We buy local dairy produce, goats cheese, yoghurt and milk, honey, virgin olive oil and village made tahini, and promote the fish restaurants directly benefiting the local producers.

We now also have a small shop in the village selling these local products along with hand woven kilims and local craft. A speciality of our breakfasts is our home made wholemeal bread made from local stone ground organic flour and olives and conserves from the garden. We also make our own wine from the vineyard which we serve at our weekly barbecue.

We recycle our waste into glass, burnable and organic to make compost for the garden and encourage our guests to do so. We use energy saving light bulbs and turn off all electrical appliances to save energy. We are lucky to have a mountain stream running through the garden which we take care to keep clean. We have natural spring water and solar panels for heating the showers in both of the bathrooms. We use home made olive oil soap in the guest rooms. We try and promote the local culture and discourage inappropriate development and are in contact with tour operators that respect the environment.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
