Environment
Construction: There is great care taken by the architect from the planning stage to retain the character of the site where the hotel exists … or will exist. The hotel occupies about 44 acres of the 220 acre island leaving the rest in its natural state. There is also a policy not to build higher than the existing tallest palm tree on the property. Where possible the building materials – wood, etc is sourced locally. Plastic and glass from the hotel is re-cycled. Energy saving bulbs are used The hotel also has a de-salination plant that reduces the draw on fresh water and water is re-cycled for irrigation purposes. The hotel keeps a regular check on the islands beaches where turtles are known to lay their eggs. The site is kept free of debris, especially plastic, washed up on these sites. The frequency of checks is in line with breeding season. The Sports Centre organises hikes on the island which gives the guests a different perspective and allows the guides to highlight the natural flora and fauna. Community All vegetables and tropical fruits are sourced locally according to season. Fish is caught locally away from the Marine Park which is designated no fishing zone. The Seychellois not only have an opportunity for employment if they are experienced, but additionally they can also to be trained at the Academy to improve their skills and to develop new ones. Beachcomber’s presence in the Seychelles was initiated by the purchase of an existing hotel and converting this into an Academy for training new staff employed from the local population. The academy also has residential status for the staff that cannot be accommodated on Sainte Anne island. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
