Memorable parts? I thought my hosts were amazingly helpful. The house was lovely . There was lots to do in the local area and I loved the walking. Fiona and Gareth were on hand for advice and the emphasis on Sports was very interesting. Tips? I had my bag stolen in Girona. I think it was unusual in the city but I would take care not to carry everything around with you .take copies of passports and have emergency numbers at home. I found the local people including the police really... (more)judith cockrell

The most memorable part of the holiday was scuba diving in the Gulf of Aqaba. The diving sites and aquatic life were amazing... The people, food and view from the hotel was lovely. I would definitely return to this hotel again. (more)Tracy Watson
On a windy evening, the restaurant staff kindly brought our dinner over to the Bedouin tent, where we were able to enjoy it near the fire and follow it with tiny cups of mint tea and a shared sheesha. Exquisite! (more)Linda Petra
The hotel was a wonderful find!! It is beautiful, and all the staff without exception were very friendly, and helpful - I don't think "NO" is a word they ever use to their guests!!!! (more)Carmen Luck

We had a late flight into Olbia and got lost on the last leg in the dark. We were worried that the hotel would be closed as it was so late, but when we finally arrived, we received such a warm welcome...One word - perfect! (more)Sarah Outram
Hotel staff were lovely and did there best to advise us on what to do and gave us regular weather updates. The food was good. A bit more variety at breakfast each day would be better though. (more)Marcus Booth

Venezuela beach hotel
Memorable parts? Venezuela is a fantastic place to go for a holiday. Most memorable was the local people's capacity to drink beer from 9.00 am onwards, so when in Rome... The Islands of Los Roques were amazing to look at but, Grand Roque is pretty dull, very expensive and overrun with Europeans. Tips? Tips to others, go to Choroni/Peurto Colombia, great beach, good value and lots of fun. We stayed in an old Hacienda and went on guided walks in the mountains where we saw loads of... Hotel and Spa in Austria
Memorable parts? Really friendly family-run hotel. Fantastic food and spa treatments. Felt they made an extra special effort with us being one of the few English speaking guests. Great location with our balcony looking out onto the alps and a few minutes walk from the hotel puts you in beautiful Alpine meadows. Local benefits? Good recycling facilities in the room, lots of local produce used in the restaurant and bikes were available in the hotel for local green travel. The manageress... (more)Heather Waghorn

Cyprus hotel accommodation in Lysos
Memorable parts? This is a wonderful hotel. It is a small hotel but run very efficiently and we most enjoyed our time there. There were always free loungers by the pool and although there were a number of guests we often had the pool to ourselves. It was the best pool I have used for a few years. The most memorable part of our stay were the evening meals which were buffet style but of excellent quality providing an opportunity to taste different dishes. Tips? Book half board if... Memorable parts? Seeing the interesting sites around Olympus and bathing in sheltered inlets when on a boat trip. Tips? Local benefits? Yes as the hotel used locally sourced organic food. Locals were responsible for tourism and protected the environment around. Overall rating? Relaxing, enjoyable and the hotel accommodated our every need. The managers were friendly and helpful giving good advice. Will go again! (more)Georgina Houston

Beach hotel in Croatia
Memorable parts? Ljubo and his father, owners of the accommodation, made our eight day stay a most happy one. They were most welcoming and helpful, providing for our every need. The pansion is clean and the room we stayed in was comfortable with a lovely view out over the bay. Ljubo provided us with great breakfasts with fruit from his own farm. Loviste is a lovely small town of only 200 inhabitants. Tips? We hired a car from Dubrovnik airport, but used it only occasionally,... (more)Caroline Brookes

Gran Canaria hotel accommodation
Memorable parts? The very friendly greeting from Magui & her English speaking staff member, the freshly squeezed orange juice from the fruit growing in the garden, the very twisting mountain roads of the island and the route to the hotel. Found the use of the old buildings/renovation of them fascinating, retention of old features in the rooms (we had an old oven in ours), the different levels of the garden and the fruit trees - just wonderful. Tips? Unless you are sure of it being... (more)Fiona Dodds

Caithness hotel in Thurso, Scotland
Memorable parts? Discovering new sites, talking with local people and having a wonderful meal for my birthday at the hotel! Tips? To be sure that they receive the right booking dates, the vouchers, etc. Local benefits? Certainly since we bought souvenirs and knitwear from locals (charity shops, souvenirs shops) and walking more than usual our bodies also benefited of the holidays! Overall rating? The hotel welcome was OK, but their administration not good... they... (more)Laurence Northcote

Booking a Family Resort, by Helen Truszkowski.

As the parents of young children planning your holiday inevitably means putting the kid's needs first and your own desires second. Increasingly nowadays, though, you'll find it needn't be that way. There are a swarm of hotels and resorts that offer something for every member of the family.

Once you've picked an island or even shortlisted a few resorts, however, there's still much to consider before arriving at one spot. The real key to a successful holiday is asking a bucketful of questions before you book.

What you need to ask

1. What kind of supervised activities do you offer for my children's age-group? What do they include? Do some activities or excursions cost extra? Are all your staff trained? (You'll want the staff to be a minimum age of l8 and have at least two years experience working with children.)
2. Does the hotel have children's menus? Can you cater for special diets? Can I get a kid's meal outside hours? Are kids excluded from the restaurant at any time?
3. Do you have an on-site doctor or registered nurse?
4. Do you offer cots, strollers, highchairs or other children's supplies? At what cost? (Make sure to ask about the 'little things': bedsheets for the cot; extra charges, if any, for buggies; nappies; bottle warming)
5. Do you have a pool with a shallow end or separate toddler's pool? Are there lifeguards on duty? Is the pool enclosed?
6. Do you offer a baby-sitting or baby-listening service? If not, can you recommend an off-site baby-sitting service charging reasonable rates? What qualifications do their staff have? Can they provide references?
7. Do you offer in-house laundry service? (Only a parent knows the perils of travelling with a limited amount of clothes and a messy toddler)8. Do you offer any resort transport? If not, how well are you serviced by public transport?
9. What is the room layout? Do any of your rooms offer kitchenettes, a kettle or mini refrigerators? (Think about your needs. You may decide you need an all-suite hotel rather than a standard double room. It can make sound financial sense)
10. Are there any reductions for children?
11. Do you offer discounts on adjoining rooms? If so, how much?
12. Are the rooms child-safe? What kind of doorknobs does the bathroom have? (Bathrooms are one of the most hazardous places for children. You'll be able to child-proof a regular doorknob, but not a lever style doorknob)
13. Does the hotel have a smoke alarm and a sprinkler system? Are there clearly marked exits on every floor?
14. Do you provide any courtesy rooms between checkout and transfer?

Thankfully more and more resorts now have websites, so you can often preview rooms as well as the pool and the resort itself.Bear in mind that if you are a family with 3 or more kids many family travel arrangements – such as 'kids stay and eat free' – are restricted to one child per paying adult. Bear in mind, too, that sometimes a maximum of 4 individuals are allowed per room. Many family resorts have family suites or cottages that can accommodate a larger family: but expect to pay extra for the 'fifth wheel.'

Finally, remember it's not just the facilities that matter, but a relaxed, child-friendly approach which can make all the difference.
