Not to miss

The whistle language, El Silbo, is by far a unique expression of La Gomera. Rising originally during aborigine times, it was used to communicate between one deep canyon and another. Nowadays it is taught at school and the UNESCO, has awarded it in 2009, as an Intangible Patrimony of Humanity. Daily shows at Restaurante Las Rosas in Agulo, from 1 to 3 pm.

La Gomera is also known as the Columbus Island. It is here that Christopher Columbus made a stop with his three caravels to supply the ship with water and stores, while sailing across the ocean in search of the New World on his first journey, on 6th September 1.492, as well as the following two journeys. The site where the Admiral stayed overnight is today the Columbus Museum. Other places historically worth a visit are The House of La Aguada, The Assumption Church, the Earl´s Tower, the Archaeological Museum and the Historical Archive complete the cultural offer of this beautiful town.

Hiking

La Gomera is a superlatively beautiful island, overflowing with green, palm tree-clad valleys, charming rural villages, impressive cliffs and coastline, and sweeping bays of black sand beaches bathed by crystalline waters. By far the best way to appreciate this pure, natural island is by taking to two feet and getting out and about on a hike.

The island’s greatest treasure is the Garajonay National Park, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an unbeatable place for a walk. This dense rainforest is notable for the richness of its flora and has a unique ecosystem. A large percentage of the animal and plant species found here cannot be found anywhere else on earth, having disappeared from the European continent during the last ice age. This unspoilt natural wilderness offers hikers a variety of forested environments through which to walk, from a jungle of damp and misty laurel-like trees, to peaceful springs and tiny streams.

Outside the park, hikers can enjoy traversing a range of diverse landscapes, including dramatic mountains, deep ravines which stretch down to the sea and volcanic black sand beaches. Valle Gran Rey in the island’s south west, and Vallehermoso and Hermigua in the north are ideal starting points for hikes of varying lengths.

Water activities

The fascinating scenery does not stop at the coast. The unique underwater landscape beneath the waters off La Gomera’s south coast, combined with the comfortable water temperatures, make diving here a popular – and immensely enjoyable – activity. An abundance of barracuda, pike and tuna can be found in these waters, as well as a variety of subtropical species such as trumpet fish, parrot fish and clown fish. Rays are also commonly seen.

Playful dolphins can be spotted throughout the year in the coastal waters surrounding La Gomera and with a bit of luck and a keen eye, you may even see whales swimming out in the open waters. There are several boat trips available from the island, which allow you the chance to get close to these impressive mammals and also enjoy time relaxing in the beautiful Atlantic Ocean setting. As many as 21 different species of dolphin have been spotted in this area, with six of them being regular visitors to the waters around the island. You are most likely to see the Atlantic bottlenose dolphin, while the whales most frequently spotted here are pilot and beaked whales, with the large group of long-finned pilot whales living between the waters of Tenerife and La Gomera being the highlight.

The constant winds of the Atlantic Ocean make La Gomera an ideal spot for sailing. The isolated bays and beaches offer numerous choices for where to drop anchor and the waves in the region are wide and gentle, with powerful storms seldom seen.

Getting there

La Gomera can not be reached directly from the UK. Travellers from the UK must fly to Tenerife and then take a connecting flight or ferry to La Gomera. Direct flights to Tenerife are available from most major UK airports including London Gatwick, Luton, Stansted, Birmingham, Manchester, East Midlands, Doncaster Sheffield, Durham, Norwich, Bournemouth, Exeter, Blackpool, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Derry. Ryanair, EasyJet, Monarch, flythomascook, Thomson Flights and Jet2 are the main flight providers.

Binter Canarias is the main airline for inter-island flights within the Canaries, with daily flights between Tenerife North airport and La Gomera. The average flight time between the two islands is 30 minutes. Ferries to La Gomera leave from Los Cristianos harbour, in the south of Tenerife and take approx 70 minutes.

Getting around

A rental car offers the best way of exploring the island individually, while taxis can offer a similarly tailor made experience. Travelling by bus allows visitors time to enjoy the beautiful views but the slightly irregular nature of La Gomera’s bus services mean that the experience can be a somewhat stressful one.
