Northern Lights reply to this post
Any suggestions about when and where are best for seeing the northern lights?

I'm up for wild and interesting but have no great desire to stay in the ice hotel.

Thanks

Hi Sally,

The Northern Lights ought to be visible from any northern Norwegian town. Tromso in Norway has a Northern Lights Festival which you might be interested in. It happens when the sun re-emerges for the first time in two months. Canada is another country where they are visible especially Calgary. The Capital of the Aurora Borealis (where they are best seen) is Churchill, Manitoba, Canada N 58 degree from the equator. Churchill is also the Polar Bear Capitol of the World. They are best seen in the winter, but it is possible to see them in summer although they are not as dramatic more like a flashing- dancing white light in the sky.

Hi Sally,

Northern lights can be seen in Finland, Norway, Sweden and of course many other Nordic countries. I live in Finland and I've seen them in Rovaniemi Lapland Finland.

Northern lights are better seen in clear skies and the best period is from December to February. Try to avoid city with lights pollution. There is no direct correlation between weather and Northern lights and in the next years there are not going to be very strong appearances due to the position of the sun.

There are many other hotels then just the Ice hotels. If you need more help just email me in my blog I'm the Finnish Travel Expert.

Hope it helped!

Safe travels Claudia
