I find the best way to travel is to think about a place you'd like to go to and then tell everyone that you're going - family, friends, partners, work e.t.c. This way you have to go because if you don't you just look like an idiot. Once I'm on the road I like to be buffeted about by fate, safe in the knowledge that if I don't like somewhere I can always just get on a bus out of there.
