I first went travelling in Africa in 1977 - hitch-hiking from home in the UK to Timbuktu in Mali - and I have returned frequently to travel in West Africa and Kenya to research and update five editions of the Rough Guide to West Africa and nine editions of the Rough Guide to Kenya.
