Barnstaple to Fremington Quay on Devon's Tarka Trail Posted 23 Aug 2009 by Maggie Watson Estuary views, cormorants fishing and railway cuttings bedecked with flowers and butterflies...Now I’ve a confession to make. I didn’t do this bit, but Ian took the children and biked from Fremington to beyond Barnstaple and back, cycling across the road bridge that crosses the Taw and out towards Chivenor. He says he had enough to do coping with the kids without taking pictures, so most o...more...
Puffing Billy to Bideford Long Bridge Posted 21 Aug 2009 by Maggie Watson The weir where Tarka swam, Oooooooohh - an even longer tunnel, the Iron Bridge at Landcross and finally the station cafe at Bideford and a bacon butty...This has to be one of my favourite stretches of the Tarka Trail. It’s about 5 miles to Bideford, walking (get the bus back) or cycling. We left from Puffing Billy, the old station just outside Torrington (on the 315 bus route or the A386 if yo...more...

Bideford to Fremington, once the busiest port between Bristol and Lands End Posted 10 Aug 2009 by Maggie Watson From the old station at Bideford we rode the 7 miles to Fremington Quay, once the busiest port between Bristol and Lands End. There we enjoyed glorious icecreams, the penny-farthings suspended from the café ceiling and grainy pictures of bygone grime. We’d parked the van in the back streets of East-the-Water, across the Bideford Long Bridge (although we could have taken the 315 bus again – it ...more...
Puffing Billy to East Yarde - water, woodland and weird benches Posted 09 Aug 2009 by Maggie Watson We started this section of the Tarka Trail at Puffing Billy. It meant we could get there on the bus from our Devon eco lodges http://www.wheatlandfarm.co.uk, hire bikes, and you see the bench artwork along the way in the logical order (more of that in a mo). And anyway, who wouldn't want to end up at Ochard Cafe in East Yarde? http://www.yarde-orchard.co.uk/. Puffing Billy is the old station j...more...
Tarka Trail - live music at the Orchard Cafe Posted 04 Aug 2009 by Maggie Watson Back on the trail. This time a sunny off-road cycle along disused railway lines, past nature reserves, towering sculpture, through tunnels of trees... to the Orchard Cafe at East Yarde - BBQ, folk music and beer!Time for a biking section of the Tarka Trail - we started at Meeth Halt. There's a bus stop here, but the service isn't frequent. The old station platform is overgrown, but the path l...more...
Tarka Trail - Taw Green Cross to Bondleigh Posted 24 Jul 2009 by Maggie Watson It's only a two mile stretch, but you've got to start somewhere and the forecast wasn't promising...The goal was a cup of tea with my friend Carole who lives next to the lovely old church in Bondleigh. So we parked at Taw Green Cross on the B3220 (there's a layby) and headed off to Bondleigh. Immediately we were on roads small enough to accumulate gravel and stones down the middle, and bef...more...
Devon's Tarka Trail Posted 21 Jul 2009 by Maggie Watson The challenge: to complete (as near as possible) the southern loop of Devon's long distance Tarka Trail - a walking and cycling route inspired by Henry Williamson's Tarka the Otter book. Why that's a challenge: 2 kids, ages 6 and 2. The plan: No particular order - just doable sections from my 'expedition base' - Wheatland Farm eco lodges http://www.wheatlandfarm.co.uk near Winkleigh, Devon. ...more...
About Origin Travel History Posted 17 Jul 2009 by Le The Ngoc One night in 1999, on the way back to my hostel, I heard a voice behind a tree, it said “… Dad where are you ? Mum where are you? Everynight I sleep on an empty sidewalk…”, then I went closer and met a boy, looked at him with his dirty face, tattered clothes… but how can I help him? with almost empty hands, nothing in my pockets? I ran to a shop nearby and bought some bread for him. I knew that I ...more...
We made it - Mexico to Canada on tandem Posted 10 Jun 2009 by Holly and Nick 2750.1 miles and 53 days of riding. I don't want to be melodramatic, but I think its safe to say that was an epic adventure. The closing stages weren't easy ones. We hadn't looked to closely at the map of the Northwest of the USA before but it looked to us like that page of the atlas had been screwed up, thrown in the bin, retrieved and then been just slightly uncrumpled and left, well... lumpy...more...
The big and small of Spring! Posted 10 Jun 2009 by Holly and Nick 2000 miles done and dusted, we have finally left the desert behind us and its time to head West.Since arriving in Wyoming and traveling up into Montana, the last 2 weeks have been filled with awesome mountains, alarmingly close wildlife encounters and incredibly generous hosting. On arriving in Jackson excitement was high. A highly anticipated destination being home of the Grand Teton Mountain...more...
From desert to snow in Western USA Posted 06 May 2009 by Holly and Nick Absolutely incredible mind blowing stuff. I have lost all feeling in the majority of my fingers. My bum will probably never look the same again. When Nick and I finish a days ride we look more like long lost arctic explorers than youthful cyclists. My body hasn't experienced this level of physical exertion since being made to do the bleep test back in '96. Consequently we have both shed that stone...more...
The London Book Fair Posted 26 Apr 2009 by Aline Dobbie I attended the three days of the London Book Fair at Earls Court. India was the Market Focus country so obviously as I write on India it was a good idea to attend and I went in my capacity as a travel writer for a magazine that goes to the Indian diaspora but is published in the UK.It was very well run and easy to navigate and I had managed to find myself a small hotel very close to the venue...more...
Meet Carlos, our new tandem! Posted 20 Apr 2009 by Holly and Nick After an incredible bus ride up through the dusty open vastness of Mexico, Hol and I were nervous and excited about the prospect of getting a bike and getting on the road. Looking at dust devils skirting across the plains we suddenly realised what we were about to undertake; 2,500 miles of some of the worlds hottest deserts, tallest mountains and deepest canyons. However, before we could even cons...more...
Birmingham UK's "second city" is surrounded by history and scenic trails Posted 13 Apr 2009 by Robert Kimberley My home in Tamworth is north of Birmingham famous for its industrial heritage and home of numerous museums to do with engineering, trains, canals, cars, motorcycles, guns, and mining. But near where I live are other sites. Boswoth field made famous by Shakespeare and other battle sites are not far away. Being the centre of England civil war battles are scattered around. Edgehill, Naseby, Worcester...more...
La Paz, the World's Most Dangerous Road and Bolivian WWF Posted 31 Mar 2009 by Em Todd I hadn't been looking forward to another epic Bolivian bus journey so I just threw some cash at the problem, and ended up on a super comfy and ex-Argentinean night bus run by El Dorado from Sucre to La Paz which took 13 hours arriving at 7am, complete with luggage safely stowed and an emotional reunion with my backpack at the bus station. The view coming in on the bus to La Paz is pretty stunning,...more...
Camino de Santiago - Spiritual plains Posted 08 Oct 2008 by Holly and Nick The cathedral city of Santiago de Compostela in north west Spain is believed to be the final resting place of the apostle Saint James. After being beheaded by Herod in 42 AD for spending too much time with Jesus he was immediately martyred, and his followers brought his body back to western Spain from Jerusalem. The final leg of this route has now become the most popular Christian pilgrimage in th...more...
Tandem in France - Arriving in The Pyrenees Posted 06 Oct 2008 by Holly and Nick After appreciating the joys of French river valleys in the North we tackled some trickier terrain from Chinon southwards. Despite some tough hills we still managed to marvel at beauty and kindness through the Dordogne, Aquitaine and into the foothills of The Pyrenees. Ten days into our trip we went to stay with Doug, an English chap who loved the tandem and consequently invited us to come an...more...
Tandem in France - Visiting the locals Posted 21 Sep 2008 by Holly and Nick Since we left we have cycled over 500km south to just east of Chinon. We have weaved our way through stunning back lanes and followed languidly flowing rivers past rambling old farms, beautiful country mansions, fields of fodder and traditional villages where no one speaks a word of English. The wind has been at our backs and the sun has been shining and there isn't much else we could've asked for...more...
