I am a grandmother of four and have travelled independently to many countries since retiring but for the past 4 years I have been returning to Uganda I have helped a small community in the south west Uganda to open a Guest House that is suitable for volunteers to stay awhile - and then help in the local schools, our own nursery school and with womens groups in the area. I am now actively looking for volunteers to go out there - and be sure that any money they spend - either at the Lodge (£50 per week for full board & accommodation) will stay within and ultimately help that community See www.ugandalodge.com |

I have been independently travelling in Africa for 20 years and have recently set up my own travel company called From Here 2 Timbuktu. I specialise in taking people across the Sahara and on small group tours in West Africa, principally Mali, Cameroon and Senegal. I do a 6 month journey from the UK and you may join me for 2 weeks or more of Faraway Festivals, tribal trips, river cruises and gorilla trekking. All of my trips take people to some of the remote communities that I have befriended on my travels, to far and distant places as my company name suggests. I have long felt that tourism in Africa tends to concentrate on the wild life and the landscape whilst the most exciting, vibrant and inspiring side of Africa - its diverse people and their extraordinary cultures - passes by the window of the 4x4. The aim is to give people that independent travel experience without the hassle, to get you right out there into the back and beyond and to put something back into some comunitiies which are very dear to my heart. |

I love East Africa. I already visited Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda and climbed their summit. Batian on mount Kenya in 2004, Kili in 2006 and Margherita peak on Rwenzori in August 2008. I have realised my first dream: walking on all african ices before they are completely melt. I inted to return to Tanzania and climb Mawenzi. |

Travelled independently for years pre-kids, and we've now dragged them along with us ever since... easy places like South Africa and Mexico from 4 months old, to Sabah, Ecuador and the Galapagos and Tanzania in the last few years. They're never too young to get on the road. Dream places - Madagascar, Ethiopia, Gabon and Sierra Leone. |

I am an American woman business owner and operate a backpacker hostel called 'SenegalStyle Bed & Breakfast' I also design African clothing and drums. I moved here with my 3 children about 10 years ago. 2 are grown and on their own and I have one 14yr old son who lives with me and goes to a local Senegalese school. All my children are American and speak 3 languages (English, French, Wolof, the local dialect), went to regular schools and got an OUTSTANDING EDUCATION. I am very pleased that I made the decision to raise them in Senegal. Previous to moving here, I owned an African art store in the mall in Pensacola, Florida called "Out of Africa" and now that I am IN AFRICA I wholesale African drums, clothing and other items online around the world and run a bed & breakfast called 'SenegalStyle' for backpackers or travellers who want a more 'homey' travel experience in Dakar. I know what it's like to be an 'outsider' - I was once a tourist here myself! As I have an extensive retail background (30 years) in African goods/business, I have made numerous contacts over the years for just about everything that's available here in Dakar. The infrastructure is very good, cybercafes are everywhere and Senegal has MANY business opportunities for a hard worker. If you are thinking of relocating here and have money to invest locally but don't want to get ripped off, let's talk! I'm an AF brat so I've been travelling all my life and have been to some very interesting places, dragging my children along for the ride! Through it all though, we have all gained a richer more postive outlook on life and are grateful for what we have and where we are. |

I started my travels after University at the tender age of 22 and many years later I am still going strong and indulge my wanderlust on a regular basis. India is my all time favourite and I can't see that changing for a while! I no longer have a wish list, I just see where the wind takes me. I have worked in travel since the year 2000 and have worked for responsibletravel.com since 2006 - where travel minds combine with ethical attitudes and make for a perfect combination. |
