My top tips - local ideas, insider tips, special things to see and do
Walking through a dark, damp and chilly street in Reading isn't the most appealing of things to be doing on a weekly evening out. However at approximately 10:30pm I was amazed to find the wonderful Global Cafe [web link]
Wandering across the weathered, dark oak floor let your bones warm and your muscles relax as your mind becomes focused on which temping pew you decide to take. The window, to the left, is strewn with small round mahogany tables, dimly lit by huge glass green bottles dripping in hot candle wax. Bright yellow shades of paint light up the larger dining area enclosed in towards the back of the room. I almost expected to see an enthusiastic African tribe draped in embroidered wraps to be dancing, drinking and eating Merrily.
Sweet, dark hot chocolates from the well stocked bar of hot, cold organic and fair trade goodies, soon made their way over to our table. We sat sipping daintily whilst watching a slow stream of late night revellers meander there way into the town centre.
The music was light and invigorating and the ambiance was spot on. This cafe offers hot and cold drinks daily from 9am - 11pm and the chef cooks up amazing (as quoted by the Reading Evening post) Ethiopian dishes which I am yet to try next week.
Every month the Global Cafe serves up world wide home-made and fair trade cuisine. Monthly 'feast' tickets start at £8.95 forr all you can. I've heard they sell out pretty fast-I'm off to get mine now.......yummy!
