My top tips - local ideas, insider tips, special things to see and do

This goes for all countries. Plastic bags may be the devil's work, but they can also be a Godsend. Pack all your clothes in plastic bags before putting inside your backpack. Use them as "drawers" to separate things out. It makes life so much easier being able to lay your hands on the right thing and the right time. And when it comes to packing, you just shove all the plastic bags back into the backpack, and voila. They keep your items dry too. Take spare bags for shopping so you don't have to ask for one, only to throw it away five minutes later. Plastic bags. They are your friends.

Fantastic plastic! I recently did a report on this lady in Brown County, Indiana (one of those amazing, vast mid-western US landscapes) who lives in an artisans community and she uses plastic bags to make rugs! She got fed up of seeing them strewn in trees or lying along the roadside, and she runs a weaving studio, so she put the two together and sells her wares online at www.homesteadweavers.com

Brilliant! The humble plastic bag gets to live another day. I met a guy in Swaziland who makes backpacks and shoes by weaving together old telephone wire and mohair. It's amazing how people can see the potential in otherwise defunct materials. We could all learn a lesson or two from that...
