Energy efficiency measures and renewable energy sources

There is no doubt that the Earth is warming as a result of mans actions. Much of the source of the warming is caused by the energy sources we use. Using energy generated from a renewable source and energy saving measures are one of the most important environmental actions that we can take to help improve the environment.

Use renewable energy source:

Switch to renewable sources; solar, wind, flowing water, biomass solid, liquid or gas fuels, passive solar heating arrays, heat pumps and geothermal systems. Where these are not viable, gas, if available, is cheaper than electricity and produces less CO2.

• If you are based in the UK switch your electricity provider to Ecotricity who topped the last Which report on Green Power. In many other developed countries there are electricity providers offering electricity from a renewable source.
• Install solar pannels. If Bryn Eltyd can do it in Wales's Snowdonia mountains it will work in most places. In many places it will even work out cheaper. Solar power is becoming an increasingly affordable option for even small businesses.
• Look into alternative transport fuels, petrol driven vehicles are no longer the only option.
  
  Tanzania safari lodge, Saadani Park We are trialling the use of biodiesel as a fuel for our vehicles and generator. The advantage being that the village may be able to grow the plants that produce the vegetable oil.
  
  

Energy saving measures

If your business makes energy savings not only will you be reducing your own costs but you will also help save global resources and reduce the impact of global warming.

• Check the efficiency rating of fridges and freezers.
• Use long-life/low-energy bulbs.
• Use ecologs (compressed cardboard fruit boxes) instead of wood.
• Wood burning stoves offer an alternative source of heating.
  
  Farmstay in Italy, Le Marche The heating system is run using renewable energy: a low consumption wood stove (the wood we use comes from our 20 hectares woods gathered when we are cleaning the woods or pruning).
  
  
  
• Use small kettles to decrease water and power useage.
• Candles offer an alternative to electric lighting.
• Use recycled charcoal dust pellets for heating.
• Insulate houses.
• Change boilers. Energy efficient condensing boilers are considerably more economical.
