Paradise islands off the beaten track

Paradise islands off the beaten track

Finding your paradise island off the beaten track… There are many well-known islands which have been luring travellers for a long time, however, the vast majority of the world’s islands remains relatively unexplored. Some of these undiscovered paradise islands could be beckoning for your next holiday to an island retreat…

Although traditionally associated with sun, sea and sand, an island holiday does not have to be just about relaxation, and we have given some ideas of our best island holidays with a difference:

Culture
It's great to enjoy some relaxation, fine beaches and tropical sunsets on your beach holiday, but why not throw a bit of culture into the mix to make for an even more interesting holiday? Often the local culture is overlooked but immersing yourself in a local festival or just daily life can be one of the most interesting elements of your trip, as some of the examples below illustrate...

Caribbean island hopping On this Windward Isles & French Antilles holiday you go island-hopping in the Caribbean and travel the language shifts from English to Creole to French, with time to relax, snorkel and wander through traditional villages. Alternatively you could head to the islands of  Trinidad & Tobago stay in a spectacular villa or apartment property and experience the unspoilt tranquil beauty of this island.. The culture is a mix of African and East Indian (amongst others), a diversity reflected in the food and music - and of course the warm waters beckon. Or you could visit the African island of Zanzibar  to sample all the delights Unguja has to offer, spending a few days investigating the cultural heritage in Stone Town before heading to the coast to relax on the glorious palm-fringed beaches and maybe try some diving or snorkelling

Nature and wildlife
Galapagos wildlife Islands teeming with life, often endemic, can be a real attraction to wildlife enthusiasts. This tiny 170 acre coral cay of the Seychelles,  surrounded by a protective barrier reef is best known as an ornithological paradise. Apart from a year round population of at least 20 different species, the island can boast claim many first time easterly, westerly, northern and southern records for vagrant birds. It is also a breeding ground for the endangered Hawksbill Sea Turtle, which come ashore to lay their eggs between October to March. Why not step in Darwin's footsteps by visiting the Galapagos islands , renowned for its weird and wonderful wildlife and where you are likely to see land iguanas, lava lizards, geckos, Galapagos penguins, Darwin's finches, frigatebirds, albatrosses, gulls, Blue-footed boobies, pelicans and Galapagos hawks, among others.

Similarly, Australia's  Lord Howe Island , a subtropical, crescent-shaped island sanctuary with its sculpted mountain peaks rising dramatically from jewel-toned waters, sits off Australia’s coast 700km north of Sydney. With a climate described as a ‘perpetual spring’ and its unique natural environment declared by a World Heritage Listing as precious and protected, Lord Howe Island is widely regarded as the world’s last paradise.

Learn to sail a yacht in Greece, The Ionian Sea Learn a new skill
Combining an island holiday with the opportunity to learn something new , like for example on this trip to Cuba where you will not only learn Spanish and salsa, but also trek the Sierra Maestra mountains including the highest peak in Cuba. You could also venture far from the all-inclusive resorts to explore some of the most beautiful and unspoiled areas of the Dominican Republic and learn Spanish. Or why not learn to sail a yacht in The Ionian Sea in Greece. The Ionian is one of the Mediterranean's most popular yachting destinations with gentle breezes, picturesque islands and sheltered harbours offering the perfect introduction to sailing. The Southern Ionian is ideal for the less experienced sailor due to its sheltered waters and generally shorter routes.

Diving
Diving in Sulawesi Islands in their very nature - being surrounded by sea - often offer some wonderful diving, so why not make the most of it? There are many options for diving locations such as this beach hotel on Corn island , Nicaragua or diving around Mafia island combining a four night safari in the stunning Selous Game Reserve in southern Tanzania, with six nights on the Mafia Archipelago which is a diver’s paradise. For something truly exotic however, this Sulawesi diving resort claims that divers who have visited  famous dive destinations all over the world, frequently tell them they have never seen such a vast, pristine and enjoyable reef area. There are literally hundreds of world class dive sites, many still unexplored.
