Guatemala house building volunteering
How Guatemala house building volunteering makes a difference
Environment
Many Guatemalan families live in poor quality makeshift homes, built of nothing more than cardboard or sugar cane walls with dirt floors. The combination of makeshift building materials and poor construction leaves families extremely vulnerable to damage during the stormy season. Poor quality and dilapidated housing also fuels health problems and other social problems. Volunteer who work on this project help directly with some of the poorest families to build or rebuild houses making them strong, safe, culturally appropriate and affordable to maintain.
Volunteers live and work alongside the locals on this project; they take public transport to and from the project each day and use simple, local accommodation so that their impact on the environment is as small as possible.
We have a strong relationship with our team in Guatemala who know and understand their country. By working with the experts in their own environment we are able to be confident that the work our volunteers contribute to is worthwhile and genuinely needed.
Community
In addition to building homes this project works with the issues faced by the families that live in these poor neighbourhoods. They work with locally run initiates and not only lend their time but also provide funding which is directed towards healthcare and education to assist the most vulnerable families in the Guatemalan highlands.
This is undoubtedly one of the most rewarding projects! Volunteers make a huge difference to the people and the community, but see first hand in a short space of time how you have made a difference.
Support team members in Guatemala are locally employed; with accommodation locally run and public transport used so we are confident that the money spent in country goes straight into the local economy where it is most needed.
All volunteers sign a code of conduct which sets out the relationship of cultural understanding and respect with the community they live in. Our volunteers become part of the community, not tourists looking in.
