How this holiday makes a difference

We are committed to preserving the intricate and complex ecology of the area; we endeavour therefore to minimize the impact on our surroundings. The lodge is currently using a number of green technologies at the camp and sponsoring others in the community. Off cuts from vegetable waste are used to produce Methane gas that we use to boil water. Water is pumped to the lodge and the village by a windmill kindly donated by guests and as many products we use for cleaning are either locally produced or registered bio-degradable.

As part of this itinerary we recommend a visit to one of our sister company projects. In one of the local villages we have set up a bio-mass charcoal farm that uses organic waste from fields and converts the bio produce into sustainable charcoal brickets. This is especially important as the area is especially significant as one of the last remaining lowland coastal forests left in Africa which unfortunately is being cut to produce charcoal for use in local homes. Furthermore, donations received will go straight back into the construction of a spiritual retreat designed to be run, managed and owned by the local community so as to protect a significant track of coastal forest.

The lodge is owned jointly by two partners from Burundi whose beliefs firmly surround the principles of conservation through dynamic, grass rooted, community action. They realise that to protect an area of outstanding beauty that the people who reside there should benefit from its gains. They have enforced their views on responsible action throughout the lodge by employing the majority of the staff from the local village, by reducing water usage, ensuring that indigenous rather than exotic species of wildlife and flora thrive throughout the camp and help where ever possible with the National Park rangers in anti-poaching and community education programmes.

We recommend that guests offset their carbon footprint by supporting one of the mainly campaigns available or supporting SANA in one of its projects to replant indigenous trees and mangrove forests.
