Responsible tourism: Autumn Northern Lights holiday in Finland

Environment

The forests rich in berries and lakes full of fish have offered food for the locals for generations. The meals served will be of local produce as often as possible.

Some of the old houses close to the Lemmejoki national park can only be reached by waterways. The locals have the skills and knowledge of getting around in the nature without the use motor vehicles. Motor vehicles will only be used when necessary.

The hotel used to serve as a local Sami elementary school. When the school was moved elsewhere, the locals wanted to restore the building and turned the empty building it into a cosy wilderness hotel where their guests can enjoy the peace and tranquility of nature by the lake.

The wilderness hotel is located right next to the Lemmejoki national park where local wildlife can roam freely and forests are protected. Lemmenjoki is the largests national park in Finland. By visiting the area travellers help conserve the untouched nature of the national park. Animals are all treated with respect for all activities and excursions.

Community

The family-run wilderness hotel is run by locals. The activity providers and guides are reindeer herders and husky mushers who have lived in the area for generations and are passionate about preserving the area and its culture and warmly welcome travellers to learn about their way of life.

Menesjärvi is an area inhabited by the Sami people for generations. Our suppliers all have their roots in this area. The locals are especially known for their skills in making beautiful handicrafts from the organic materials available to them. During this holiday the traveller has a chance to visit local craftmakers such as a local felt artists who are all friends with the hotel owners. By participating in this holiday guests will understand and learn more about the history and heritage of the local Sami people in an honest and open way.

Tourists to the area help to sustain the livelihoods of people living in remote communities without which they would be forced to migrate to towns and cities.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Where do you begin?! Being able to watch the Northern Lights and the views across the fjord from our fisherman's hut. The dog sledding at Camp Tamok. Drinking hot chocolate in a Sami Hut next to a frozen lake at night waiting for the Northern Lights.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Get involved and make the most of what is on offer. The tour operator put the package together for us and were really helpful, what they put together suited us perfectly and helped to make the holiday a real success.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. Camp Tamok is run by local people, many of whom have grown up in the area and know it well. There is no gas, electricity etc up there so it is very unspoilt.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

It was fantastic, a trip of a life time made even better by the Northern Lights actually making an appearance. Everyone we met was really friendly.
