Responsible tourism: Dordogne self guided walking holiday, France

The Bassin de la Dordogne has been added to the World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR). The Dordogne’s catchment area provides an example of great biodiversity, from mountainous landscapes to one of the biggest estuaries in Europe. Unesco highlighted how the river played an important role in the economy due to the tourism industry being based around the Dordogne's heritage and natural landscape, which works alongside agriculture and forest exploitation.

We avail of a Travellers Code of Conduct and all our documents are printed on recycled paper. Our staff also follows an Environmental policy (e.g: only using hard copies when necessary or switching off the lights where the areas are not in used.)

Last but not least, as hikers by passion, we have a strong ethic about respecting the places we go to and their environment, either for business or personally (e.g: not leaving any rubbish behind us during a day walk or using reusable water containers), and we encourage our guests to act responsibly while traveling.

The area is a celebration of colour and diversity of landscape. It is also called the “Land of the 1001 sites”. To walk here is to travel through time.

We are committed to work with local hotels and restaurants only. Actually, we personally know each person we deal with as we go on ground to tailor make these holidays for you.

Dordogne and modern pilgrim will get a chance to embrace this well alive culture as you walk from town to town at your own pace. As we work with local and family run hotels and guesthouses, you will also get a chance to interact with local people, most of them being from the region for generations and keen to share information about their land. Dordogne is a land of tradition with many castles from the Middle Ages and Renaissance periods, testimony to the Hundred Years’ War and Wars of Religion that raged here; medieval villages full of character (among the "Plus beaux villages de France"); romanesque churches adorned with sculpted tympanums.

The Périgord is also envied the world over for the splendours of its traditional gastronomy. High-quality products used in the preparation of its local cuisine include foie gras, other duck- and goose-based ingredients, the famous black truffles of the Périgord, chestnuts, walnuts, and Périgord strawberries, not forgetting the wines of Bergerac, produced from top grape varieties on land that neighbours the "grands crus classés" of Bordeaux.

Every day, your luggage will be brought from hotel to hotel by our local transporter, who knows the area better than anybody else and will ensure your bags are transferred in a professional and timely manner. By dealing directly with local professionals, we also ensure them maximum benefits.

Touring historic towns including Sarlat with our kids. Dinner time also great
fun with excellent meals.

Buy a more detailed map to cross reference with the info provided by the tour
