Responsible tourism: Southern India small group holiday

These small group journeys have a maximum of 16 like-minded travellers which ensures that all travellers have an amazing overall experience with the destination and that they enjoy the flexibility that comes with the small group dynamic. Travelling in a small group also allows us to limit the damage inflicted on the local environment.

From the moment you land in country our local guides and Western tour leaders will also be on hand to give advice on preserving the local environments. In addition to this we will also issue you with our custom created “Tread Lightly” booklet which is filled with practical advice on reducing the impact on the local environment. This includes advice on recycling, social spending, what you may wish to consider avoid purchasing (rare items or products made from poorly sourced wood and other sections of advice for protecting the natural environment.

We are committed to measuring and assuming responsibility for our carbon emissions. We have worked with Cleaner Climate to offset emissions from our Australian and United Kingdom offices during 2012. The predicted emissions for 2012 are based on our previous carbon footprint and include direct and indirect emissions from company operated vehicles, electricity usage, business related commercial flights, paper consumption and waste disposal. During 2012 we will recalculate our footprint to ensure the completeness of our footprint and offset any shortfall. The emission reductions are generated from Clean Technology (Kyoto compliant) projects in Vietnam (hydro) and China (wind). These not only reduce emissions, but also contribute to the sustainable development of local communities. You may also choose to offset the emissions generated by your international flight to Asia.

We believe that travel should entail an exchange of knowledge and perspectives, a sharing of wealth, and a genuine appreciation of India’s beautiful natural environment. This philosophy underpins the heart and soul of our style of travel. We recognise that poorly planned itineraries or poorly informed tourists contribute less to cross-cultural understanding and less to the livelihoods of local people.

Throughout this journey we also make the conscious effort to dine away from hotels in small, independent or family run restaurants. We employ a similar strategy on all our sightseeing with an aim of avoiding the traditional methods of seeing India's iconic sights.

In India we directly support the work of the Purkal Youth Society. This organisation is dedicated to enhancing the lives young people across India's rural regions who are often deeply disadvantaged and lack proper access to education. Outside of India we also support 9 other community projects in destinations across Asia. Not only do we support them directly but, where possible, we encourage our travellers to understand the projects so they can gain a more lucid insight into daily life.

Rare amongst other tour operators are our offices on the ground in Asia. This direct presence means that we are much better able to control the content of our itineraries, the actions of our suppliers, and the style of our Small Group Journey and tailor-made travel arrangements. In short, our offices in Asia give us leverage in implementing our responsible travel policy.
