Responsible tourism: Walking in St Lucia

Environment

By ecological tourism like this to St Lucia we are helping to conserve the pristine beauty of the island which could be lost were visitors not to come to enjoy this landscape.

We arrange walks in the National Parks and Forest Reserves. Not only will the clients get to enjoy the beauty of these areas and to enjoy the local wildlife, flora and fauna but in paying the entry fees they are putting money into the area so that this envoronment can be enjoyed by many people in the future.

We advise our clients to remain on the pathways while on their walks. This is so that they do not damage the local environment by wondering away from the path.

At the choices of accommodation that we have chosen to use on St Lucia the 'air conditioning' comes in the form of the soft, cooling breezes which comes in from the Atlantic. Whilst the accomodation which we use is surrounded by the lush greenness of the hillsides and their vegetation they do not impinge on it. They also are in areas where it is possible to enjoy the wonderful vistas of the island including the spectacular Piton mountains without the need to travel to them.

Community

For all of our guided walking we use a guide who has been guiding walkers in St Lucia for a great many years. This enables our clients to benefit from hikes enhanced by our guides' local knowledge on the island's diverse flora, fauna and wildlife as well as in insight into how the island works and its culture.

Wherever possible we attempt to make the most of local products and services which are available in order to enhance the holiday for our clients. This can include the use of local transport companies or car hire where necessary, as well as the locally owned and run accommodation hotels which we partner with on the island.

We believe it is important to work with the local community in order to maintain the beauty and splendour of the island of St Lucia as it currently is rather than it being spoilt, which could so easily happen were the local community not behind working to keep the island in it's diverse paradise.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Reaching the top of Gros Piton.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Go for it!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The whole issue of environmentally friendly tourism is a complex one. In many ways there are benefits in that local people get much needed employment and sometimes improved amenities and infrastructure. But these changes don't always benefit those most in need and fail to filter down to ordinary people. We hiked off the beaten track and saw parts of the island that the 'normal' tourist (whatever that is) does not usually see. Our local guide clearly enjoyed sharing his knowledge of the area with us.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent.
