Responsible tourism: Southern Thailand tailor made holiday

As with all our holidays, the accommodation you will stay at has been chosen to meet at least our basic environmental criteria, which include putting in place measures to conserve energy and reduce water usage and providing advice on how you can reduce your own footprint while you’re there. All the places you stay at buy their food locally, cutting down transport emissions and helping local farmers.

On this particular itinerary, we’ve incorporated stays at two hotels which make the most of their surroundings, in the Khao Sok national park and on the unspolit island of Koh Klang. You can enjoy low-impact activities like wildlife spotting and river tubing or exploring the mangroves by canoe.

Our Thai partners are actively involved in pioneering and promoting higher environmental standards in Thai tourism as part of the Green Leaf Foundation. They are also developing new kinds of holidays that combine ecotourism and community tourism, for example working with the Doi Tung royal project which helps hill tribe people to protect their lands and traditions, or developing holidays at organic farms and the Petchaburi wildlife centre.

Creating social and economic benefits for local people is the central goal of our company and as such we try to incorporate meaningful encounters with local people throughout our trips, never ‘human zoos’. For example, on this tour you will have the chance to visit a local fishing village and try various activities including: learning to make local handicrafts and catch fish the traditional way, kayaking through the mangroves, building a miniature boat of your own, finding mussels, painting a beautiful batik and learning how to winnow rice – truly unforgettable!

We support community-based tourism projects which help preserve traditional culture and resource management, especially with hill tribes in the north. Our Thai partner is also working with CBT-I to implement best practice in visits to these communities, training their guides to act as a bridge to the people they visit and letting them show what they want and are proud of to visitors (which may be ‘non-traditional’). This concept of the community being in control is very different to the mainstream of hill tribe tourism which tends towards pre-packaged ‘ethnic’ experiences and degrading gawking. On a national level, they have pioneered synergy training, bringing together hotels, tour operators and communities to better understand each others’ needs and so create more sustainable and enjoyable holidays. We are proud to be taking part in the push for stronger responsibility in the huge, and sometimes destructive, Thai tourism market.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Trekking in the jungle

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Elephant rides and trip down the river very touristy and perhaps more suitable for older people.
Islanda Hotel does not have a beach - just mud flats which was disappointing.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

In the jungle yes. In our trip out on the sea - no. Reefs were dead and there were hundreds of people crammed onto small beaches that we seemed to visit only because veryone else did so. Environmentally very bad.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Thank you very much for your comments on your holiday to Thailand. Responsible
travel and environmental protection are absolutely key to our holidays and are
at the core of our business principles, so we were naturally concerned to hear
of your experience touring the islands off Krabi. Having undertaken an
internal review we no longer offer this optional boat tour of the islands
around Krabi and we are working with our partners to develop an alternative
that will ensure we absolutey minimise our enviromental impact.

We would also like to apologise for any confusion regarding your stay at the
Islanda Eco Village Resort. Whilst we love to recommend this hotel because of
its strong links to the local community and environmental standards it does not
fit everybody’s ideal of a Thai beach hideaway as it does not have a
traditional beach. However we do have other fantastic properties in the Krabi
area that are on the beach.

Many thanks once again for your comments and helping us to constatly monitor
and imporve our holidays for future travellers.
