Wildlife specialist
Typically trips are expertly guided by a leading specialist with a good knowledge of the area to be visited. Inevitably, wildlife is the main focus of attention however, the aim will be to incorporate all other aspects of the natural world in an attempt to be as broad-minded as possible. A local guide may often accompany trips.

How this holiday makes a difference

Environment

This gorilla tour is an in depth experience, that allows us to go way beyond just tracking the gorillas. Firstly, our local guides are the best available and their knowledge and enthusiasm for their country is a huge part of the success of the tour, combined with leading wildlife experts, offering an insight into the wildlife not possible elsewhere.

This tour is designed to support the wildlife and people of the region allowing you to get to know them in small groups (a maximum of 8 people on our tours allows for a much more personal and intimate experience) and through the authentic, locally owned eco-lodges and their wonderful staff.

Community

We use a locally owned company which operates to the highest standards and is one of the longest established and most experienced in country. This personal knowledge allows our clients to meet the people and communities in a way not possible on a conventional tour. This includes visits to local Primary School, which we have supported through these trips over the years, even having a library built, named and painted in our honour and a chance to meet the people who work tirelessly here.

Aside from the wonderful people you will meet, the gorilla permits themselves help to continually fund and improve the welfare not only of the great apes themselves, but on the communities and people nearby, including guides, hoteliers, porters etc who rely on them for their livelihood.

Story of the holiday provider

Passionate animal-lover Jules was galloping on a horse across the plains of Mongolia when he had the idea to set up a travel company which used tourism to raise funds and awareness of the plight of endangered animals. He worked with the Orangutan Foundation in Borneo to put together one of his first trips and today has a portfolio of incredible holidays that work with leading authorities on wildlife and contribute toward conservation. All staff share his ethos of ‘travel to protect’ and believe responsible tourism can be an effective tool if it helps local people realise the economic potential of their natural habitats.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

This is a very difficult question to answer as the whole trip was extremely memorable and exciting, but if I have to choose, it was the first moment that I saw the gorillas. This moment will stand out in my memory as one of the great moments of my life. I was moved to tears.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Stay longer in each place and try and get more than one permit to track the gorillas. Also, make sure that you are fit.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

I hope so and I hope that we rewarded the people who were so wonderful at guiding us appropriately. Also, I hope that the money that is paid for permits, etc, does help to allow wildlife and people to live side by side

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

This was the trip of a lifetime and more than fulfilled all of my hopes for it. I had been scared that something would go wrong or not be as we had imagined it might be, but I worried unnecessarily. It is one of the best things that I have ever done.
