Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Tanzania safari holiday, 7 days

Environment

Our environmental initiatives extend from inside our company offices to our tours in the field. We acquired large solar panels for trapping solar energy. The solar energy is used to run our computers and also for lighting in the offices. In the field, where possible we use alternative modes of transport that cause less pollution to the environment such as bicycles or even move around on foot.

To enhance conservation of the environment, we try to limit the number of people in a given park at a given time by using vehicles whose maximum carrying capacity is 6 people. Incases where the group is larger we split them into smaller groups and assigning more safari vehicles. We take our clients to unique small accommodations that are not over crowded by tourists, hence trickling the benefits of tourism down to small accommodation operators in the travel industry.

We contribute towards the various environmental conservations by belonging to organizations such as the East African Whale Shark Trust, Colobus Trust and the East African Wild Life Society. We also actively take part in environmental awareness activities such as beach clean-ups and walks and seminars organized by Kenya Association of Tour Operators (which we are active members) World Bird Watch. In addition, we contribute towards the management and conservation of wildlife by paying park and reserve fees to the respective authorities during our safaris.

Community

Not only are we a Kenyan owned and based company but we also own a camp in a Masai Village in Loita Hills near the famous Masai Mara Reserve. Our Maji Moto Eco Camp is a joint venture between us and a local Masai community. Our key aims are to help the local community through the jobs we are able to provide yet at the same time to encourage young tribesman to preserve and nurture their culture. The camp was built, exclusively by local Masai people and using Masai building materials and architecture. This provided jobs for nearly 50 families at the time of a major Kenyan drought. Exploring nature on foot with Masai guides, villages and school visits are daily activities here. The camp is also a base for our cycling trips.

We carefully select our partners in this industry. The selected partners are those that adhere to corporate social responsibility policies that are set by the Tourism Board. Also our supplies to a larger extent are from local suppliers in preference to the foreigners. Our guides are locals who are very much conversant with the environment, communities and cultures in which we operate in.

We also encourage our guests support the informal artisans by purchasing souvenirs from the local crafts shops found at almost all major tourist attractions. For these locals their art and craft work is mostly their only source of income.

Our employees are well trained and are also well acquainted to the properties they offer to the guests as they under take FAM trips every year to sample the service, food, destination/attractions and accommodations out in the field. In addition, they enjoy the benefits of employment such as medical welfares, pension schemes and study leaves among many others. As a company we also allow our employees to join unions and also attend seminars and trade fares.
