Responsible tourism: Vietnam & Laos small group holiday

Environment

100% CARBON OFFSET:

This journey has had its carbon emissions offset for every passenger on every departure, so you can travel guilt-free, knowing we’ve got your carbon footprint covered.

TREAD LIGHTLY:

We issue all our travellers with a 'tread lightly' guide that is filled with information about how best to limit their environmental impact in Vietnam and Laos. this includes tips on how to engage in friendly barter for goods with the locals, how help local businesses, tips on how to deal with street beggars and, from eating to shopping, how to limit your environmental impact in Vietnam and Laos.

LOCAL EXPERTISE:

On all of our private and small group journeys our local guides and Western tour leaders are on hand to help clients reduce their impact on the local environment. For example. In more rural areas we can guard against any potentially damaging actions like hiking in delicate areas, littering and avoiding certain shops/industries.

BEAR SANCTUARY:

At the Kuang Si Falls in Luang Prabang in Laos, we will visit the Asiatic Black Bears sanctuary to learn about the work this organisation are doing to protect this endangered species in Laos.

ELEFANTASIA

We sponsor ‘Elephant First Aid Kits,’ for use across Laos. These boxes are filled with basic veterinary items, given to elephant owners - often referred to as Mahouts - to help them care for this now endangered species.

CLEANER CLIMATE:

We work with Cleaner Climate carbon consultants to fully offset emissions from our Australia and UK offices. The funds from the offsets support clean energy projects in Thailand, India, and China. Moreover, as a local and international operator we are in a unique position that allows us to better mitigate our effects on the local environment. Examples include using modern vehicles that reduce carbon emissions, avoiding poorly run hotels and educating our local guides on environmental issues.

Community

ON THIS JOURNEY:

STREETS INTERNATIONAL:

- Streets International. This NGO has a training restaurant in Hoi An that recruits young people from the local community and trains them in practical skills in hospitality (from chef to front of house). Our travellers (often in pairs) are taken to a little-visited market by one of the students (supervised by a teacher). This gives our travellers a great insight into local life as well as helping the students gain credits towards a recognised qualification. We also offer clients the chance to dine at the restaurant, where all proceeds are donated to the NGO.

KOTO:

In Hanoi we give travellers the chance to dine at the charity run restaurant, KOTO.

SPIRAL FOUNDATION:

In Hue we visit SPIRAL Foundation where we'll see how this NGO trains disabled locals in various trades. You'll get a chance to try some handcrafts for yourself!

SILK WEAVING:

At a fair-trade silk-weaving village in Vientiane (Laos) learn about this fine art whilst ensuring profits are returned to the local community.

SPIRAL FOUNDATION:

In Hue we visit SPIRAL Foundation where we'll see how this NGO trains disabled locals in various trades. You'll get a chance to try some handcrafts for yourself!

WHAT ELSE WE DO IN VIETNAM AND LAOS:

LOCAL GUIDE POLICY:

In Vietnam and Laos we directly recruit, train and offer development to all of our local guides. We also run a local guide training programme with a Vietnamese University with successful graduates receiving a job with our company.

LOCAL DINING:

On this journey we direct our travellers to dine away from large hotels, instead frequenting smaller family-owned or charity run restaurants. This is a great way for travellers to experience authentic cuisine and support local business.

OUR OFFICES IN VIETNAM AND LAOS:

As well as having offices in Australia, the United Kingdom and North America, we have offices in several cities in Vietnam and Laos. Our direct presence means that we are much better able to control the content of our itineraries, the actions of our suppliers, and the style of our Small Group Journey and tailor-made travel arrangements. In short, our offices in Asia give us leverage in implementing our responsible travel policy.
