How this holiday makes a difference

Environment

This operator has raised significant funds in support of the world’s leading wildlife and conservation agencies and has increased awareness of conservation through the holidays it runs. Furthermore it has voluntarily spearheaded collective action campaigns such as Travel Operators for Tigers in South Asia and continues to work with conservation initiatives on the ground to provide much needed funds and to give clients a privileged insight into this crucial work. With the help of our local operator this trip emphasises the small and simple experiences of nature as well as the once-in-a-lifetime-kind, such as watching a wild bear in its natural habitat. Enjoyment is based on simple living without electricity or running water, but with a great sense of good food and considerate hospitality. All food is locally sourced and is put together using delicious, traditional recipes.

The bear viewing is handled sensitively from a low impact, non-obtrusive, custom built hide. While vegetables and fruit are put down to attract the bears, meat is not left in order to avoid creating a dependency on what is only a small part of the bear’s natural diet. The guiding principle to all of the above is a mantra this operator has long adopted – the wildlife comes first.

To mitigate the carbon dioxide released into the high atmosphere through your air travel we are giving £10 per client to Rainforest Concern if you book international flights through us. Rainforests have a central role to play in the slowing of climate change and yet we are removing forests from the planet at a faster rate than they can grow back. It is thus axiomatic to try and preserve the forests that we have rather than replanting. Rainforest Concern was established in 1993 to protect threatened natural habitats, the biodiversity they contain and the indigenous people who still depend on them for their survival.

Community

Our travel partners, accommodation, service providers and ground agents are all carefully chosen to ensure their commitment to the environment. Most are quality, family owned businesses which reflect the unique character of the places, the abiding hospitality of its people and the remarkable spirit of its wilderness. Vargas Wilderness Lodge and the bear safaris we offer based from here are endorsed by Nature’s Best - the first national quality label for nature tours in Europe, recognising operators who are committed to ecotourism.

Story of the holiday provider

Passionate animal-lover Jules was galloping on a horse across the plains of Mongolia when he had the idea to set up a travel company which used tourism to raise funds and awareness of the plight of endangered animals. He worked with the Orangutan Foundation in Borneo to put together one of his first trips and today has a portfolio of incredible holidays that work with leading authorities on wildlife and contribute toward conservation. All staff share his ethos of ‘travel to protect’ and believe responsible tourism can be an effective tool if it helps local people realise the economic potential of their natural habitats.

Holiday Reviews

We invite every traveller who books a holiday via us to send in a review. Because we don't run the holidays they're completely independent and unedited... remember to read between the lines though, as two people on the same holiday can have different views!
