Responsible tourism: Masai Mara luxury camping safari, Kenya

We want everyone to relish the wonders of Kenya’s enchanting environment at first hand. It’s an ecosystem that we are committed to sustaining. From our organic farming plot to low-impact safari vehicles and rainwater harvesting schemes at our Masai Mara resorts and the commitment to local fishermen and businesses at our beach resort in Kilifi.

Our new lodge opened in the Masai Mara, built in mind of the local environment, wildlife and people. The Mara Engai Foundation has many projects in place for the local villages; these initiatives promote gender sensitivity, capacity building and local income generation. The Mara Engai Foundation initiatives include, agriculture education, cooking IT language and literacy courses, and many more initiatives to promote trade, not aid. The Foundation also includes a clinic where locals will have access to basic healthcare, first aid and health education.

The lodge itself operates on solar energy and energy efficient methods, where possible. Water is harvested, and used for farming and grey water. Food waste is used for compost in the organic farm. The organic farm at the Lodge produces 80% of vegetables and fruit consumed by guests and staff. Water is heated through ISO certified energy efficient solar heaters. The lodge was built using local dead wood, local materials and local labour for construction. Most structures in the lodge are constructed in a way, so they can be removed, without leaving a footprint.

Safari game drives are conducted 6x6 Safari Pinzguaers, these have been specially adapted to maximise fuel efficiency and of course to enhance the overall safari experience. The Lodge operates against strict game drive guidelines, these ensure there is minimum impact to the wildlife and the environment in the Masai Mara. These include a no littering policy and allowing animals the right of way in the nature reserve.

The local environment plays a central role in the Mara Engai experience. The local community of vital concern to us. We have built a community clinic in conjunction with our Masai Mara site, which acts as a triage facility, daycare centre, paediatric unit and dispensary – the only one of its kind for more than 30 km.

We have also constructed a school and made substantial contributions towards two more in the area.

But it doesn't stop there, we are eager to enable visitors to give something back to a region that offers them so much. So we have set up the Mara Engai Foundation.

This foundation is run by a panel of community elders. Guests can get involved with schemes such as farming projects, women’s programmes or wildlife conservation. They can talk to the foundation, whose members can provide them with information and guidance, whether they want to offer money, time or expertise.
