Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Vietnam and Cambodia holiday, small group

Environment

We have a strict environmental policy to make sure that the environments we visit are not damaged or spoilt in any way. Our “Leave No Trace” ethic is applied to this trip and as tour operators, it is something we are careful to promote. Your guide on this trip will have been trained to uphold this policy and all clients are fully briefed on appropriate/responsible behaviour whilst in wilderness areas.

We are very aware of the economic, ecological and ethical impact tourism can have on ancient cultures and fragile environments. We realise that taking clients through this region can have a negative impact on the environment if not handled responsibly and as such, on all of our trips we go to great lengths to minimise the negative and accentuate the positive - after all, there are also many good things that the traveller can bring.

By keeping the group size to a maximum of 12, we can also minimise the human impact on the fragile sites we visit – particularly important as this trip visits some delicate ecosystems.

When you take one of our trips, we make a contribution to “Carbon Clear” – an organisation devoted to ‘offsetting’ or ‘neutralising’ harmful greenhouse gas emissions caused by your flight. This is done by funding projects across the world that will reduce greenhouse gases on your behalf through sustainable energy or rainforest restoration.

We encourage our travellers to leave only footprints and take only photographs, thus continuing to support our focus on environmentally kind and sustainable attitudes. We also use local guesthouses and homestays, thus contributing towards local families and businesses in Vietnam and Cambodia. Throughout the tour, we use many bicycles and boats, ensuring our greenhouse gas emissions are kept to an absolute minimum.

Community

Three decades of war in Cambodia have left scars in many forms throughout the country. Unfortunately, one of the most lasting legacies of the conflicts continues to claim new victims daily. Land mines, laid by the Khmer Rouge, the Heng Samrin and Hun Sen regimes, the Vietnamese, the KPNLF, and the Sihanoukists litter the countryside. In most cases, even the soldiers who planted the mines did not record where they were placed. Now, Cambodia has the one of the highest rates of physical disability of any country in the world. While census data for Cambodia is sketchy, it is generally accepted that more than 40,000 Cambodians have suffered amputations as a result of mine injuries since 1979.

That represents an average of nearly forty victims a week for a period of twenty years. We are proud to support two NGO’s dedicated to helping eradicate this problem. The first, Adopt-a-Minefield is an NGO that saves and improves lives by raising funds to clear landmines and help landmine survivors in various places and around the world. For further details please visit www.landmines.org.uk. The second organisation is the Mines Advisory Group (MAG), is an international implementing NGO for the MAT Project in Quang Binh Province. MAG clears and destroys the landmines and left-over weapons that make areas unsafe after war. Each Mines Advisory Group mobile Mine Action Team (MAT) removes the burden of mine disposal from the local villagers and provides immediate assistance in the removal of all reported items from within household areas, villages and communities.

On this trip to Cambodia and Vietnam, we use local ground handlers - this means that all the operational costs go directly into the local economy and helps to improve employment opportunities in remote regions. By incorporating locally owned hotels, local restaurants, frequent trips to the local markets and the services of guides and drivers into our itineraries, we ensure that money you spend on your trip goes directly into the local economy and local communities benefit from tourism.
