Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Wild Taiga activity holiday in Finland

Environment

Wildlife: We know our wildlife, beavers, birds, Finnish caribous, bears, wolverines, wolves, lynxes and are committed to conserving it and encourage our guests to follow our lead. During our tours guests will learn a lot about how the wild taiga animals behave and how to protect them.

Waste: What ever package we take with us for the tours, we will bring back for recycling, if metal, paper, bio waste. We also clean the places from any rubbish left by anybody else. Luckily, our places are mostly clean.

Every man's rights: People of all nationalities have the right to enjoy the Finnish countryside freely under the traditional Finnish legal concept known as everyman’s right. But together with these wide-ranging rights comes the responsibility to respect nature, other people, and property. These rights and responsibilities you will get to know during our tours.

Water: We show we understand why water is too precious to pollute it. In Finland we have water enough, but we must take good care that the quality of the waters stays good. Our lakes and rivers are shallow and because of this very vulnerable.

We also want to protect our area from any extra noise or light pollution.

Community

Energy: We reduce our energy and find appropriate renewable energy sources.
During a tour in August we will make a fire to cook our lunch in the wilderness. Fire wood we have a lot in Finland. No extra fuel is needed.

Buildings: We build, restore and equip using carefully sourced local materials and in a style that tells the cultural story of the landscape. In our area this means wooden lean-to-shelters in the wilderness.

Transport: The transfers for the tours are not long - maximum 30 km, and we are in the middle of the wilderness!

Suppliers: We use local taxis, local small private owned hotel and a local small husky farm.

Old traditions: traditions are kept alive in many ways: organizing tar boat tours, wilderness treks with cultural stories and explaining the old use of the forests. The company owner is one the most active member in Wild Taiga organization – promoting fare travel and co operation between the small local companies. He is one of the most active people organizing meetings and evenings together to speak about common problems and development of the nature tourism in the area.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

There were so many memorable parts: seeing a bear (and being able to hear it snuffling) only metres from our hide; canoeing down rapids; paddling across peaceful lakes and not seeing another soul all day; the beautiful scenery; picking a glut of wild berries; making coffee over the campfire and discovering yummy Finnish foods. Choosing a holiday operated by local people meant you really got to know Finland. My guide Urpo was always checking that I was okay and showing me how the locals did things.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

I was a beginner kayaker but always felt safe. The activities can be adapted for all experiences. Oh, bring mosquito repellent for when you camp out overnight!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I felt much happier supporting smaller, local companies than larger impersonal
businesses and felt I also benefited as my guide Urpo knew the local area and wildlife extremely well.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I had a fantastic holiday, thanks to a great mix of activities and knowledgeable,
friendly guides. The hotel where I stayed in Kuhmo was on the edge of a beautiful lake and the food was excellent. I would highly recommend this holiday to anyone who loves the outdoors, likes to be active and loves trying new things.
