Responsible tourism: Costa Rica tailor made holidays, Rainforest adventure
Costa Rica's biodiversity is world renowned, and with good reason. This trip has been designed with wildlife and the natural world in mind, with extensive time spent in national parks. The entrance fees that we include as part of the price of this tour play an important part in helping the Costa Rican government maintain these protected areas for the benefit of future wildlife, including some of the most endangered species on the planet.
When walking in the national parks our travellers are given full briefings by our local guides as to how best to minimise their impact upon the environment, including staying on the marked tracks, disposing of litter properly and not damaging plants. Guides are all properly trained in techniques to ensure that they do not disturb wildlife unnecessarily as they conduct the tours.
Where possible we use accommodation that has been designed and run with sensitivity to the environment. A good example of this would be the El Establo Hotel at Monteverde, which includes protected forest as part of its grounds, helping to preserve the unique species in the area.
The main focus of this trip is nature, but we recognise that it is also critical that local communities benefit from the presence of tourism in the areas that we visit - without this, wildlife conservation can often be perceived as something that disadvantages local groups and deprives them of natural resources.
We use exclusively local guides on our trips - not only does this benefit local communities but it also means that travellers are able to gain insights that they might not have otherwise. The hotels that we stay in on this trip employ an overwhelming proportion of their staff from nearby communities rather than elsewhere.
We try to encourage our travellers to spread their spending among local businesses, and for that reason we exclude most meals to give people the opportunity to eat in local restaurants, avoiding spending everything in the hotel and bypassing local businesses.
In all of our pre-departure notes we include extensive information about how to travel sensitively and travellers are given guidelines on local culture and customs.
