Responsible tourism: Colombia tailor made holiday, culture and nature
We have a strict environmental policy to make sure that the fragile eco-system of the mountains is not damaged or spoilt in any way. Our guides are trained to uphold this policy and all clients are fully briefed on appropriate/responsible behaviour whilst in wilderness areas. Our “Leave No Trace” ethic is applied to all trips in all regions, and as tour operators is something we are careful to promote.
In this Colombia itinerary there are plenty of opportunities to explore by foot or by horse: in Villa de Leyva you will be able to enjoy a walking tour of this colonial town and take horses to discover El Fossil. Tayrona National Park is also purely accessible on foot, therefore allowing you to fully enjoy the flora and fauna of this beautiful area.
When you take one of our trips, we also make a contribution to Carbon Clear – an organisation devoted to ‘offsetting’ or ‘neutralising’ harmful greenhouse gas emissions caused by your flight. This is done by funding projects across the world that will reduce greenhouse gases on your behalf through sustainable energy or rainforest restoration.
All our tours employ the services of local guides and drivers, stay in locally owned hotels and guesthouses – often staying in our guides villages and homes, which again diverts important funds directly into the area. The wonderful thing about this kind of interactive tourism is that everyone gains – the locals financially, and our clients with the unique experience and social interaction.
Stay in a hacienda and support the local farming community Enjoy a 3-night stay at Hacienda Venecia, a small coffee farm in the Manizales area of Colombia’s coffee region. The lodging at the coffee plantation offers a number of shared rooms and bathrooms but also a few superior rooms with private bathrooms. While the rooms are quite basic, they are comfortable and the hotel offers a relaxed base from which to explore the surrounding coffee region. The hacienda works closely with local farmers and inhabitants in development projects to help improve their quality of life, coordinating health, recreation and education programs.
Stay in Ecohabs huts The stunning coastal Tayrona National Park is the spectacular setting for these Ecohabs - luxury huts built in traditional style, dotted along the hillside overlooking the wild beaches of Tayrona. The views are unbeatable. The 14 Ecohabs are connected by lit pathways on the hillside; they are typically spacious, split level cabins with private bathrooms and hot water. All come with hammocks for enjoying the view, and the property also has a beachfront spa and a great restaurant.
