Responsible tourism: Russia holiday, Moscow to St Petersburg
This tour travels by overnight train and by making use of local infrastructure we minimise our environmental impact on the area. When travelling within Moscow and St Petersburg we use the local metro which ensures we are not adding to road congestion and CO2 emissions caused by vehicles and also allows our travellers to get a feel for what it is like for locals living in these cities and really get a grounds-eye view of the culture and environment.
We have a full responsible travel policy available on our website and linked to pre departure information sent to passengers before they travel. This sets out our environmental policy including advice and best practices, including not littering, not defacing monuments and not taking souvenirs such as rocks or stones from protected sites.
Through the tour leader, travellers are introduced to many local restaurants, encouraging patronage of these establishments over large franchise restaurants. This allows travellers the chance to sample local fare, cooked by Russians, and get a genuine cultural experience. We encourage our travellers to learn some words of the local language to help facilitate their travels and as a show of respect for locals. By staying in locally-owned hotels travellers have the opportunity to practice some of their language skills and meet some locals during their trip.
The tour leader will brief the group on local etiquette, such as clothing required and behaviour expected by visitors when visiting churches, tombs and other sacred places. Travellers are encouraged to learn about the culture and history of the area and are shown locations such as museums where this is possible, to gain better insight and international understanding between cultures.
