How Fiji Volunteering holiday makes a difference

Environment

The island's that make up Fiji have a variety of needs, and this program aims to address the specific requirements of the Yasawa Island chain communities; who in-particular lack the financial resources to address the issues and problems they face. In partnership with local organisations and the Ba Provincial Council (the area administration), the program has identified a number of key areas in which to assist these communities - sustainable power, water supply, and resource management education.

Operating in partnership with the local indigenous community and the Yasawa Trust Foundation, you will embark on building rainwater collection systems and vegetable gardens that look to offset severe water shortages and the effects that come as a result.

Our main goal in Fiji is to improve the quality of life throughout 27 villages in the Yasawa’s. Through local partnerships we have been able to make an even greater impact on the local communities and environment in which you will volunteer in.

Community

There is a clear need for assistance, in terms of securing consistent supplies of fresh water, provision of power both in terms of availability and generation method (often diesel generators), and working towards sustainable sources of income. In these areas volunteers will assist the project and the local communities, through practical construction, education, and resource management techniques. Through the invitation of the Yasawa Trust Foundation, volunteers make a practical and tangible difference to the lives of those in these communities.

This programme and your contributions will focus on assisting our long term goal in Fiji to increase the quality of life, through the building and implementation of rainwater collection systems to address water shortages in our partner communities, which can often be severe during the dry season.

Through our construction and community-focused programmes we have to date been awarded a license to assist students in local schools and GVI volunteers just like yourself helped install the first ever water filter in the north Yasawa’s. Overall, through the efforts of past volunteers we have dramatically increased the capacity of village water catchments.

The story of the provider of Fiji Volunteering holiday

The owner of this company did a gap year trip in the early 90s which involved building a bandstand for a small village in Patagonia. While he was there, he realised the project was only helpful in developing the Western traveller as the village didn’t want a bandstand and only argued about who owned it. And so he set up a volunteer organisation which is useful to communities and provides them with resources and help with funding. Today, his projects offer travellers an opportunity to fully integrate into communities and to make a real long-term difference to the local people’s lifestyles.
