Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Dordogne Autumn walking holiday in France

Environment

We travel with respect to the environment and are passionate about the local flora and fauna about which we impart our knowledge. We support local producers wherever we go and offer local produce for our various picnics. Where possible we visit local vineyards and share their passion. We walk through the countryside and try to keep our paths clear of rubbish. We are both counsellors in our local council and will always lobby against the disappearing of hedges and other threats to the community such as massive high tension pylon lines or shale gas or wind turbines. The countryside is never safe. On a different level we will hand out one small bottle of water at the beginning of the safari and encourage people to fill this bottle up as the days go by rather than replace the bottle with a new one. We gather our own rainwater for the garden. Our house is 18th century built in stone in the local Quercy style that we have respected with our renovations. You'll be visiting it for a picnic on our terrace. In terms of transport we also give train information to encourage people to arrive by train rather than by air. And of course we talk non-stop about the beauty of Slow Food and the small time producer as we meet many of these producers during our walks either by visiting their domains where we buy their products or at the local markets.

Community

We are counsellors for our local village and help out at all the local fκtes. We source all things locally and aim to benefit our local community in every way possible and recommend our local hotels and restaurants to friends and strangers alike. We are hoping to provide a day-trip service in the summer which would benefit the local community by hiring our local donkey handler friends who would join us for picnics, visiting wineries and encouraging others to buy from them as well as ourselves, buying local produce in terms of cheeses and hams and including local activities such as canoeing or hot-air ballooning. We always campaign against any danger to our local community such as pylon lines, shale gas or wind turbines as these things would ruin local tourism which is all the area has to offer apart from agriculture. We ourselves have a small guest house and encourage our guests to visit all the local attractions and we advise them enthusiastically on local restaurants, cafιs and producers.
