Responsible tourism: Greenland holiday, Disko Bay & Eqi Glacier

Environment

On this holiday you will be staying in the Hotel Arctic in Ilulissat, a hotel with excellent green credentials. The hotel received a “Green Key” award in 2000 in recognition of their use of sustainable and responsible methods of operation and technology.

The hotel invests heavily in green technology and training, throughout the hotel sensors and thermostats are set to ensure that electricity, water and heating is used sparingly. The hotel offers 5 igloos for guest one of which has already been converted to use solar energy for all its heating and electricity needs and in coming years the other 4 will also convert to 100% sustainable energy.

The hotel has implemented a twice yearly training day which all staff must attend. This aims to draw attention to their daily routine to try and establish ways of reducing energy consumption and become more ‘green’ – prizes are awarded to staff with the most effective ideas.

In 2012 the hotel managed to reduce CO2 emissions by an impressive 100 tons and also received the Greenland government’s nature and environment award in recognition of their environmental efforts. As of September 2013, Hotel Arctic is also proud to be able to say it is 100% CO2 neutral: all electricity and hot water for the heating and tap water is now based on hydropower. In 2014 the hotel intends to take further energy-saving steps which will include installing 230 sq metres of solar panels on the Puisi Wing - production from these will be 40.000 kilowatt hours per year.

The hotel uses local produce year-round thus keeping food ‘air miles’ down and the money in the local community.

The Glacier Lodge Eqi guestrooms are all powered by solar energy.

All clients travelling to Greenland receive information in their travel document pack on the importance of not eating the often readily available whale meat in the country. The Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society and Animal Welfare Institute have created the document asking all visitors to Greenland to politely ask any hotel or local restaurant not to serve whale meat. Over time this should result in the practice being stopped.

Community

Our local Greenland agents pay fair salaries to all employees and regular training is provided to support future career development. Only local guides who are aware of local customs and cultures are employed which not only keeps the funds paid to staff within the local community but also helps avoid any potential cultural clashes between visitors and locals.

The Arctic Hotel, as well as being an important local employer for the town, helps train staff in the hospitality industry, a process that usually takes between 3 and 4 years and involves time in the hotel as well as time in school in Narsaq in South Greenland and Aalborg in Denmark. In 2013 the Greenlandic trade union movement (SIK) presented its special Management Award to Hotel Arctic for having "contributed to inspiring and encouraging the people of Greenland to educate and better themselves, not just for their own benefit but also for the benefit of progress in Greenland ".The hotel also offers 3-month internships to local youngsters studying service management.

The optional excursion to visit a local Greenlandic home for a hot drink is not only a great way to learn about the way of life in this sparsely populated country but also helps contribute a little financially to the host family.
