Responsible tourism: Laos holiday, tailor made

On this itinerary you stay in eco-lodges in some of Laos most amazing natural environments.

Stay in one of our favourite eco-lodges in southern Laos, which is set on tiny Dong Daeng Island on the banks of the Mekong River. There are no vehicles allowed on this sleepy island which, is only accessed by boat. The best way to explore the island is by bicycle.

In the heart of northern Laos, stay in a rustic riverbank eco-lodge surrounded by forests. 15 simple bungalows are crafted of wood and rattan and stilted on the river's edge. Each is furnished in a traditional style with a private river-facing balcony and large en-suite bathroom. Mountain biking, foot and boat are the best ways to explore the area.

In order to facilitate an enduring support structure for the communities we visit, and to show a commitment to these values, in January 2009 we set up a charitable foundation through which we can channel funds to both existing NGOs and our own development projects. In addition to organising ethically sensitive tours, having our own charitable foundation allows us to raise money – through the cost of our tours, charity trips and fund raising events – which can then be used to fund various projects in education, sanitation, reforestations and a number of other important issues facing developing communities. Wherever possible we are happy for our clients to visit these projects to see for themselves where and how this money is being spent.

In Laos we support the Lone Buffalo Foundation , which was set up by one of our tour leaders to offer greater opportunities for the children of Phonsavan. a rural community in Northern Laos. The Lone Buffalo Foundation helps improve prospects for the children of this poor farming area through English studies and football coaching.

All our tours employ the services of local guides and drivers, stay in locally owned hotels and guesthouses – often staying in our guides villages and homes, which again diverts important funds directly into the area. The wonderful thing about this kind of interactive tourism is that everyone gains – the locals financially, and our clients with the unique experience and social interaction.
