Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Croatia cycling tour, heart of Dalmatia

Environment

In our area we have different types of renewable energy sources. Main source of energy is the Peruca hydroelectric power plant that provides thirty MW of power source. On our tour we cycle through the Peruca plant and we visit the Europe’s first hydroelectric power plant on river Krka. Since we have a lot of wind during the year many wind turbines have been built on the surrounding hills which can be seen on the horizon during the tour. In addition, every appliance that we use has an energy saving certificate. Also, we’d like to mention that in our region there are no heavy industries that can pollute either air or waters, which eventually positioned Croatia as third country in Europe by the amount of clean water supply.

We educate guests about all the water resources in our region as we actually cycle by numerous natural springs and river sources and even encourage guest to drink those same waters as they are non polluted and show them how we need to behave responsibly towards the surroundings as they are available to everybody. we also participate in cleaning the area around springs if we find any waste there. Since we make picnic lunch in the nature we make sure our picnic place is free of waste each time we arrive and before we leave the site and we always ask our guests to give us a hand. We also collect paper from the office and PET bottles and take them for recycling and we do the same with those we take and use on our trip.

Also we would like to mention that in two guest houses where we are staying. We use burning wood that has been taken from sustainable sources from Lika region where they manage forests to keep it form deforestation and without endangering wild animal habitats.

In our company we use bicycles as our way of transport and we use them as much as possible. We chose cycling because it a better way to explore and experience the nature, beauty and the culture of inner Dalmatia. This way we save energy and the nature from carbon dioxide and other toxic fumes that cars emit.

Community

Lot of people from our area are involved in our business by doing small jobs for us and we share the income with them. We encourage the local people to develop their own businesses for we are a small community with very little involvement of big companies. It makes us more connected and gives us opportunity to grow. We have noticed big changes since we started to develop our small family business. We would like to emphasise that many of our neighbour became environmentally more conscious and really making sure that Sinj is a pleasant place to stay. We proud ourselves to be very friendly people and don’t mind sharing some of our culture with the world, since we have plenty.
Since we cycle trough many villages we have built a very good relationship with local community. From them we buy food, souvenirs or sometimes we just stop for a drink (schnapps usually). This is the way we ensure a warm welcome to our guests and make them feel like a part of the community

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Jure picked some fab cycling routes with some beautiful views. For me,
the best day was the last – incorporating some beautiful countryside, some mixed cycling – up hills, down hills and flat – and the last spectacular view over the delta to the sea followed by the long, fast ride down to the coast.
But every day Jure aimed to show us something special, and did not disappoint.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Bring your padded cycling shorts and practice some hills. The hotel rooms are basic but adequate, we only spent time in our rooms to sleep.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes - the business was run by an extended family, food was locally produced, local people were involved in taking us out for the days, we were drinking wine produced locally and spent a night in their accommodation, and we spent money at the local national park

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent, would highly recommend this trip to anyone wanting a cycling
trip to see the real Croatia
