Responsible tourism: Italy walking & cultural holiday, Lake Como & Milan
This easy walking tour focuses on the nature and beautiful scenery surrounding stunning Lake Como, and the hidden corners of fascinating Milan. Visiting both special places on foot minimizes your impact on the local environment, and allows you to truly enjoy your unique surroundings. To begin, a nature guide will escort you on a 10 km walk along the Greenway path bordering Lake Como, pointing out sites of interest, native plants and wildlife, and the best spots to take beautiful photographs of the panorama, and ensuring that all of the group does not harm or interfere with the natural environment. Once in Milan, your urban guide will show you around the city’s most characteristic neighborhoods and bring you to the greener side of this seemingly grey-hued city. Surprisingly, Milan abounds with lush parks, botanical gardens, blooming courtyards and some of the world’s newest and most sustainable buildings. Learn how the residential towers Bosco Verticale (“vertical forest”) are helping reduce air and noise pollution by growing more than 900 trees and 2,000 plants smack dab in the heart of Milan.
Whether immersed in the natural landscapes of lovely Lake Como or the bustling streets of Italy’s most cosmopolitan city, Milan, we aim to give you a personal introduction to these special places that you wouldn’t glean on your own. To do so, we work with native guides that know the area inside and out, and can give you a local’s perspective of each of your destinations. Collaborating with these knowledgeable folks supports not only their individual livelihoods, but also the lesser-known communities and locally run businesses that they help us promote. Staying at a typical inn and small B&B in Milan, rather than international chain hotels, also ensures that your dollars spent on this trip will go towards small business owners and then circulate in the local economy. We know you will appreciate the relaxed pace of this tour and our small group sizes, and how we bring the art of Slow Travel to destinations that all too often cater to mass tourism.
