Responsible tourism: Croatia sailing holiday, land based accommodation

Our Motor Yacht for day excursions is specially designed without Propellers, instead our Rolls Royce engineers have developed a water jet system which is safe for sea animals, and our guests to swim safe around the boat.

By booking this trip you get to see a whole new perspective of this beautiful part of Croatian Islands by sailing on our Yacht, visiting completely secluded and deserted bays on our itinerary , mostly known only to our local island people. Kayaking and snorkeling on the hidden and best preserved parts of the clearest sea in Europe, guests are given the chance to explore in a ways which are least harmful to the environment.

A visit to National Park Mljet island sea Lakes and park of Nature Lastovo Island is included in the program - the fees that we pay to the National Park contribute to the conservation of that area.

In our office we minimize printing actions and recycle paper. Most of all, we ensure that negative environmental impacts are drawn to a minimum.

By booking this trip you bring much needed income to the people who are still recovering from the war-torn years, as this was the area severely affected by war, especially Dubrovnik old city, Lastovo and Vis islands that were military base in Ex Yugoslav Republic.

This trip ensures that the local people benefit as much as possible in the form of jobs (we employ local guides and drivers only) and provision of accommodation (we use our own family-owned Captain's Villa). We also use our own transfer services, buy food from the small farms and work on developing responsible waste management by stimulating waste recycle.

By buying local products you are supporting this countries’ economy and helping Croatia to stand on her feet again! We consider it our responsibility to lead efforts to maintain and preserve the integrity of this fledgling sector by petitioning the introduction of tighter controls over the use of the country’s natural resources.

Captain's Villa is our small family run hotel that employs local people and in that way is irreplaceable in the community. Our hosts in the small family restaurant prepare breakfasts , lunches and farewell dinner with our own home grown food and fish from our own pond.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

There were so many it's hard to know where to start but the beginning has to be hospitality of Zoran and Blazenca who were our hosts for the week. They are engaging, caring people who went out of their way to make out holiday truly wonderful. The staff who work for them are equally good in making sure that we were well looked after.

This great hospitality provides a framework for some wonderful adventures - on boats, exploring Mljet and Hvar and waters around Korcula and in cars, through villages such as Blato and Lumbarda. We swam in clear and still waters including the bay just 2 minutes walk from Villa Sokol. And we didn't have one meal that wasn't fantastic. Whether it was freshly made pancakes for breakfast on our balcony or freshly cooked caught and cooked fish at an agriourism restaurant, the tastes were all fresh and delicious.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Relax and take up every offer that Zoran makes in terms of where to go, what to eat, what to see and what to do.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We were providing work for Zoran and his extended family members in the village. We were eating food that had been grown in people's gardens, cultivated on people's farms they way their parents and grandparents had done, fished sustainably by local fisherman in small boats. We felt as if our presence was activitely contributing to the sustainability of people who wanted to keep living in the same houses and communities that their families had always lived in.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Brilliant. This is one of the best holiday weeks we (me, my sister, a friend who joined us from London) have experienced.
