Description of Yoga & holistic holiday in Austrian Alps
This week long January yoga and holistic holiday at MoaAlm in the Austrian Alps is combined with some winter mountain activities to provide the perfect healthy start to your year. Staying in a recently refurbished mountain chalet, in the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park, the yoga studio has the most stunning panoramic views of the peaks and valleys all around. With rooms for maximum ten guests, staying in singles, doubles or triple bedrooms, all ensuite, we are proud of our cosy, relaxed atmosphere to complement the classes and retreat. We will arrange transfers from transfers to MoaAlm to and from Lienz train or bus station.
Ayurveda at MoaAlm
Our guest specialist advisor is Daniela, a nutrition expert based in Zürich. With classes given in English, Daniela will lead four 30-40 mins sessions on Ayurvedic principles of Vata, Pitta and Kapha, which are incorporated both in cooking and natural therapies as well as detox. She will also lead a day long cooking workshop, learning about preparation, spices, drinks and recipes as well as preparing a lunch with the skills and techniques you have learned.
Yoga at MoaAlm
At MoaAlm we believe that yoga is for everyone, no matter what your age or level of fitness and, as such, our classes are prepared with all of our guests’ needs in mind. The most important thing is that you enjoy it and gain that sense of ‘union’ that the word yoga translates as from its original Sanskrit. This, for us, is a union between breath and movement, and doing that in a pristine environment like the Austrian Alps certainly allows for some of the most beautiful breathing spaces. Yoga sessions are led by our professional and highly experienced teacher, Barbara, who works not only with group sessions but towards helping individuals build a yoga routine that suits them and their lifestyles. During the week, we have ten yoga classes, two per day over five days.
Detox at MoaAlm
Our detoxification process aims to help you not only eliminate the toxins in your body but also re-energise, and start the year feeling fit and refreshed. Our mountain detox is not only about providing cleansing and nutritional food and drinks, but also providing mountain activities such as snowshoeing and cross country skiing, or simply winter walking, in order to really cleanse those lungs. Please note that, at MoaAlm, our detox does not include fasting, physical cleansing or medicines. Our approach is much more natural.
Food at MoaAlm
As mountain and outdoor lovers, we also love our food at MoaAlm, and the chef here presents our guests with the most delicious homemade and home sourced meals. Slow food is very much part of our ethos, using organic ingredients when available. During this detox week we focus on Ayurvedic sattvic foods as well as nutritional drinks to make sure you are replete but also refreshed. Mornings begin with fresh fruits, tea, juices and smoothies, with a larger healthy breakfast served after our early yoga session. Lunch is our main hot meal of the day, with a lighter evening meal that is easy to digest before sleep. Fruit and teas are available on tap all day long.
Outdoor activities at MoaAlm
We offer plenty of mountain activities during your stay making the most of the beautiful winter landscapes, such as snowshoeing and cross country skiing. You don’t need to be experienced winter sports people, just have a love of the crisp outdoors. Winter activities do involve ascents and descents, however, so please note that knee injuries may prevent participation. Of course, these activities are optional and if you would rather relax and do your own thing, that is fine with us too. We always work around all the needs and interests of our guests. For those who are keen and able to take part, we offer four activities during the week.

Responsible tourism: Yoga & holistic holiday in Austrian Alps
MoaAlm is situated at 1800m, it is 2km up the mountain from the settlement of Taurer. It is only accessible with our own vehicle or by foot. We will provide pick up and drop off on arrival/departure to your vehicle or your airport transfer in Lienz. Hiking and walking is how we get around - low carbon and far more suited to our goal of enjoying and preserving the natural beauty of the Hohe Tauern National Park.
Some days may involve carrying a picnic on a hike - guests will be actively involved in carrying out waste. Our water is supplied directly from a mountain spring and our heating system is a brand new 'eco' pellet burning system. The P4 pellet system has won many international quality awards in EU and USA, the most prestigious of all are the Blue Angel and the Austrian Ecolabel. Even in winter our south facing position can also provide supplementary energy from our solar bank.
We believe that food tastes best when it has been grown close to home. All our food is fresh and will be sourced locally where possible. And we are in luck - our region provides amazing produces such as bread, cheese and chocolate!
No one knows the mountains better than the people who grew up there! We work together with the local community of mountain guides to provide certain activities that require extensive knowledge and experience such as rock climbing, rafting, tour skiing, and paragliding.
In and around the village of Kals there are some excellent restaurants. Our guests will eat out at a local recommended restaurant on one of the evenings. If the guests choose to go on a day-trip, they might also eat out in parts of the region East Tirol, such as Lienz or Hallstadt.
Local tradesmen have been involved in the renovation of MoaAlm and we have been pleased to find a number of high quality, locally produced materials to use in the refurbishment. These tradesmen are highly skilled particularly in mediums of wood, stone and locally-produced felt.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
I enjoyed the combination of the yoga, mindfulness, walking, good food and friendship on this trip. The activities were organised well and delivered professionally by our hosts but what made this trip particularly special was the friendly atmosphere created by the hosts. We were made to feel special right from the start and we loved eating together with other guests around the table and by the end of the week, it was like we had known each other for years. However, the real highlight for me was the amazing meals created by the Chef which were healthy, delicious and used locally sourced produce.
2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Combine spending some time relaxing as well as joining in the activities on offer. The hosts are used to supporting people of all fitness levels so don't be afraid to talk to them as this is a safe environment to try something new. Do spend time talking to fellow guests and enjoy the meals but also make time for some mindful contemplation of the lovely surroundings. The building itself is very comfortable - ask for a room with a balcony if you want a view of the Alps from your room. The location is remote so talk to the hosts about the best way to get to MoaAlm.
3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes definitely. The Chef used as many locally sourced products as possible. The whole set up is to support conservation and the hosts are very knowledgeable on impacts on the environment. The hosts are also mindful of the local community and make every effort to work with the local people for the benefit of the whole community.
4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Excellent, all the ingredients of this holiday came together to provide us with an amazing experience. The slogan for the company is "relaxing active" and that is a good description of what to expect from the holiday.
