Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Indonesia holiday, orangutans and culture

Environment

Rimba Lodge on the Sekonyer River is committed to educating and empowering local communities in long term conservation (especially concerning the future of the Orangutan) and sustainable development. They work very closely with the orangutan centre at Camp Leakey and organise guided trips to the various feeding outposts. You can see as many as nine primate species, crocodiles, birds and butterflies in the jungle whilst you cruise the backwaters.

Alila Ubud also participates in community projects co-organized with neighbouring villages, the local government, and other hotel associations in Bali. There are also regular environmental presentations arranged at local schools.

Alila Manggis is committed to ensuring that the local environment is protected and there are a number of reefs near the resort that are considered to be of high conservation value. Working with the Indonesia Nature Foundation the Alila Manggis is learning how to protect this fragile eco system from global climate change and a number of initiatives have been put in place to help study what is happening under water. Alila Manggis is also committed to recycling its waste and teaching the locals how to do the same.

The Phoenix Hotel in Yogyakarta has been faithfully restored to its former glory as an example of turn of the century Dutch colonial architecture. The Phoenix Hotel is part of the Accor hotel group which has developed its own sustainable travel programme called ‘Planet 21’.

This hotel implements the following practices; Balanced dishes served in the restaurant, local food products promoted in the restaurant, no endangered seafood to appear on restaurant menus, eco-friendly cleaning products, reuse of towels suggested to guests, faucets fitted with water flow regulators, water efficient laundry to reduce water consumption for every wash, recycling of paper, cardboard and glass with sorting carried out at the hotel, recycling of food waste for compost or energy, energy-saving light bulbs, certified sustainable paper, training for personnel on responsible actions toward the environment, sustainable trade products offered in the hotel.

Community

The properties we stay at along the way are all committed to giving a fair and better deal to the local community.

The Alila properties in Bali for example are committed to ensuring sustainable tourism and the Alila Ubud has recently received silver certification for environmental practices from Earth Check. The Alila Ubud is committed to employing the majority of its staff from the local area. Around 70% of the staff live within 20km of the hotel and the majority are native to Bali. The hotel also runs a traineeship programme for tourism students.

All of the fresh fruits and vegetables available in the hotel are supplied locally and most of the products available in the rooms, such as soaps, shampoo, slippers and the spa products are produced locally and sourced through village co-operatives supported by Alila. They are all available for purchase at the Alila Living boutique.

The Phoenix Hotel in Yogyakarta is commitment to protecting children through training on sex tourism.

Our guides are all employed locally and have a passion for their homeland and a desire to share their cultural heritage with visitors. Using local guides, agents and hotels provides employment opportunities.
