Responsible tourism: Short break to Lapland in Norway

Environment

The mountain lodge was once a working farm and was converted to a high standard and in sympathy with the surrounding wildlife and landscapes. The wooden lodge uses up-cycled and natural materials wherever possible and some rooms feature disguised compost toilets.

The owners of the lodge ensure that local habitats are protected both around the lodge and also whilst on excursions. Guests can learn about the eco-systems and try to spot signs of wildlife during their stay. The lodge conserves energy where possible and uses renewable sources of energy such as wood for the outdoor hot tub.

The lodges all have turf roofs providing additional insulation benefits as well as habitats for local wildlife and insects. Arguably the highlight of your stay at the lodge will be the delicious local food that you will experience. The chef uses local ingredients including grouse, salmon, reindeer, berries and lamb to create exceptional meals in the restaurant. You'll enjoy the true taste of Finnmark sourced from providers who care about their environment, animals and landscapes.

Community

The lodge is situated in the region known as 'Finnmark' which is home to many Sami people and families. Reindeer herding is an important part of the local culture and sustains the livelihoods of many. The hosts at the lodge have a very close relationship with their Sami neighbours and collaborate with them to offer a very special opportunity to experience a day with a reindeer herder.

The aim is to offer guests an authentic insight into the Sami heritage and work in an honest and truthful way. This means that guests will learn about the history and future of Sami people - both their modern and traditional values. By spending a full day with the herder, they can understand a lot more about the heritage and therefore help to sustain it. The herder earns a good living from the collaboration with the lodge and as such it is a small-scale experience.
