Animal care internship in Malaysia

Description of Animal care internship in Malaysia

Have you ever dreamed of working closely with some of the world's most beloved animals? Imagine improving the lives of orangutans, sun bears, tigers, elephants and much more on a daily basis - and now put those thoughts into reality with our animal care project in Malaysia.

Immerse yourself in animal care and welfare, helping to care for over 1000 animals in the lush green surroundings of this centre. Not only will you be learning the ropes of helping to care for animals, but you will be actively promoting their welfare.

Animal welfare standards in Asia are sadly less forward-thinking than in other parts of the world, and as such a lot of work still needs to be done to promote animal welfare. This centre has recently changed hands to private ownership, and has since been striving to become one of the leadingcentres in Asia promoting education, conservation and animal welfare. We are very impressed with the work that they are doing and excited by the genuine contribution made by our volunteers.

You will be working closely with the staff to ensure that the animals here are well-cared for in an environment as close to the wild as possible. Assist with food preparation, feeding, cleaning of enclosures and making enrichment. Enrichment is a new concept here, and something that really encourages animals to live life just as in the wild.

You will learn about conservation, welfare and care on this animal care internship. You will live on site with other participants a in comfortable yet basic Malaysian house. Expect to share a room and en-suite bathroom with up to 2 other people. At the weekends you can explore the local area and culture.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Animal care internship in Malaysia

We are commited to conserving and protecting animals. Where animals must live in captivity we work hard to improve their animal welfare standards and ensure the best quality of life possible outside of the wild. Volunteers on this project will help to provide enrichment, create enclosures which replicate the wild and ensure high quality feeding programmes. This means that the animals in care here are living at the highest possible standards. The centre has recently changed hands to private ownership, and has since been striving to become one of the leading facilities in Asia promoting education, conservation and animal welfare - our volunteers play can play a key part in this.

Our company is an environmentally responsible one that operates recycling and reusing of waste products. We also offset carbon emissions in our office (gas, electricity, business mileage) and encourage all participants to offset their flight emissions via a carbon offset scheme run in conjunction with Tree Aid. This means that trees are planted in poor local communities to encourage local people's incomes, as well as to help sustain the environment.

Participants are advised to use hand wash gel that does not require water. We also advise to take care with water. In many of our destinations, water is precious and expensive.

Meeting local needs
Volunteers live and work as a member of the local community. This is a small community, located off the traditionally trodden tourist trails, and so bringing volunteers to this area really benefits the local population. Food is bought from local markets and restaurants, trips are all sourced locally and local transport is used when needed.

Campaigning for change
This project works to change the future for animals who have been living in conditions which do not reflect international standards. The aim is to ensure that these animals can live in comfort and with the right provisions, closely mirroring the work done in leading facilities around the world.

Cultural sensitivity
We emphasise the importance of showing respect for local people and their customs in our briefing material. Participants will work alongside permanent staff, forming close bonds and getting an insight into real life in rural Thailand.

All of our participants receive comprehensive pre-departure documentation. This covers topics on how to be culturally sensitive, how to best look after the environment when in the country and how to stay safe as well as up to date information on the political situation. They are also briefed on how to dispose of waste properly and where possible, to avoid using plastic water bottles as these are not easy to dispose of environmentally.
