Responsible tourism: Bali & Borneo wildlife holiday

Environment

We are committed to sustainability in Bali and Borneo in the environment in which we operate and in the ecosystems we encounter. You will visit several conservation centres on this adventure. This trip directly funds the Orangutan rehabilitation centre where conservationists and experts lead the way in primate research and conservation. On day 4 we will visit in Tanjung Kelaun, a Turtle Conservation centre where endangered Hawksbill and Green turtles lay their eggs. When possible we help release turtles back into their natural habitat. We seek to minimize the impact of this trip by minimizing and properly disposing of waste created. We are aware that the hot climate in the rainforest means a lot of water will be drunk so we ask that guests keep all used bottles with them in order to dispose of and recycle when we return from the trek.

We always strive to be as environmentally friendly as possible. Where possible we encourage our travellers to use public transportation and in the case of this trip we mostly travel using a traditional Klotok wooden river boat. This boat glides through the rainforest waters, causing minimal disturbance to the wildlife and is a far more environmentally friendly way to travel, as well as offering amazing viewing to travellers!

Cultural engagement and exchange is central to our company ethos, as each trip is a unique mixture of adventure, culture, and philanthropy. We maintain that one only gets to truly know a place by getting to know its people. We work closely with the Yayorin Agricultural Program who provides a unique opportunity to raise awareness amongst local farmers about alternatives to traditional slash-and-burn shifting cultivation, and instead promote the importance of a permanent mixed farming system and the value of standing forests. Yayorin projects have the potential to increase the capacity of 845 local farmers to adopt sustainable agro-forestry techniques in a regional context where three adjacent conservation reserves that constitute prime habitat for many species, including the endangered Bornean orang-utan, currently suffer from illegal gold mining and other forestry crimes.

Community

Kampung Konservasi, (Indonesian for Conservation Village) is an environmental centre, established by Yayorin, with financial support from the Orangutan Foundation. The centre not only offers educational activities (but also specializes in demonstration plots that teach sustainable agriculture and fish farming. Yayorin provide a unique opportunity to raise awareness amongst local farmers about alternatives to traditional slash-and-burn shifting cultivation, and instead promote the importance of a permanent mixed farming system and the value of standing forests. Promoting such alternative livelihoods will help to decrease local peoplesí involvement in the illegal activities in all three conservation areas, and help with the conservation of the orang-utan, and other species. We work closely with this charity, and donate regularly from our tours, and any contribution to this tour would be appreciated.

Additionally to projects you will visit and support we try our best to involve the local economy in every aspect of the trip. Our team in Bali are all locals to ensure we provide you with the best knowledge of the country and activities you will experience. You will get to taste local cuisines particularly whilst travelling on the klotok boat, you will get traditional style dishes with all ingredients sourced and bought locally. Whilst on your free days in Bali, if you are wanting to buy souvenirs we encourage you to visit the local markets to purchase items made by the Balinese, which will help the local economy.
