Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Northern Sri Lanka tailor made holiday

ENERGY, WASTE & WATER: We are committed to supporting small, independent boutique hotels that have efficient energy and waste disposal systems. The Mudhouse is a hotel particularly focused on environmental sustainability. It is an eco-lodge run built with local materials and know-how in traditional Sri Lankan style. Electricity in the different huts is generated by solar power and the design of the open hut structures allow breezes to flow through the buildings a natural coolant. A private reservoir in keeping with the artificial tanks of the cultural triangle allows guests to swim or kayak within the hotel grounds. The Mudhouse has its own organic farm where a variety of rice, herbs, spices, fruits and vegetables are grown. All waste is recycled into compost and guests are welcome to join in at any stage of the farming process.

WILDLIFE: Wilpattu National Park is one of the more undiscovered reserves in Sri Lanka. There are fewer cars than the more popular Zone 1 of Yala and so the wildlife within is less disturbed by human activity.

FRIENDS: This itinerary focuses on northern Sri Lanka, an area affected by conflict in the civil war. Visiting this region helps spread the benefits of tourism beyond the tourist hotspots and promotes the growth of local economies.

Abode Hibernation is a homestay project situated in a remote fishing village of Pesalai. It gives travellers the opportunity to experience the Christian Tamil way of life, a fringe community largely untouched by modernisation. By supporting the project visitors are also contributing to the Abode Trust, a non-for-profit organisation shortlisted for various Responsible Travel awards for their achievements. As part of their activities, they distribute donated second hand glasses and hearing aids from the UK to those in need in Sri Lanka. They also donate second hand mobile phones and provide small grants for new small-scale agricultural projects to get initiatives off the ground.

A FAIR DEAL: Local Tamil speaking guides trained by our company lead the tours in the North of Sri Lanka. This helps communities economically but also provides new avenues for career opportunities and personal development.
