Responsible tourism: Sri Lanka tours, rainforest & National Parks

WILDLIFE: Udawalawe National park is famous for its groups of elephants: there are around 400 living in the boundaries in total. Helping our clients experience elephants in their natural environment is something we are committed to. It will be far more rewarding than seeing elephants in captivity. The Born Free Foundation has been working with Udawalawa National Park to ensure off-road driving, racing and driving into elephant herds are practices not carried out by drivers on safari. They have been training jeep drivers about conduct and enlightened them on wildlife knowledge to enrich the service they give to holidaymakers.
Attached to Udawalawa is the Elephant Transit Camp. This is a centre where orphan elephants are cared for with veterinary help and food. There are specific feeding times across the day when they can be seen from a viewing platform, the rest of the time they are around Udawalawe national park away from view.

ENERGY: Tree Tops Jungle Lodge is set against Sri Lankan jungle and is surrounded by nature. There’s no electricity and meals are cooked by hand with traditional Sri Lankan methods. A resident naturalist works with local trackers to provide expert information about the animals around the lodge that can be spotted.

Gal Oya Lodge is also known for its high-end environmentally responsible tourism. The buildings are all made from locally sourced materials. Nearby village craftsmen have made the furniture by hand. Resident nationalist are to hand to enlighten visitors on the various different types of animals nearby the lodge. Gal Oya also uses no plastic water bottles, all of its water needs are sourced from a private deep bore spring with a hygienic filtering system.

FRIENDS & NEIGHBOURS: Gal Oya Lodge neighbours an aboriginal Vedda community; Vedda are a minority group living a hunter gather existence and have done so for thousands of years in Sri Lanka. Guests are welcome to trek with the Vedda learning about their way of life and learn about their history. Holidaymakers can learn about traditional hunting methods, honey fetching techniques and techniques to set traps.

Gal Oya is also situated well off the beaten track and spreads the benefits of tourism to those who would not reap them otherwise. Generally, we promote small independent boutique hotels that empower locals through employment and business opportunities.

A FAIR DEAL: We pay our chauffeur-guides significantly more than the average wage and provide training opportunities. We recognize great service and give awards to guides with the best feedback.

TRAVELLING WITH RESPECT: We prepare guests for visiting Sri Lanka before their departure. We provide thorough guides on culture and customs, religion and tipping etc.
