Responsible tourism: Thailand family experience holiday
WILDLIFE: The primary aim of the Elephant Nature Park is to provide a sanctuary and rescue centre for elephants. Here the animals are cared for and provided with medical treatment as needed. Populations are threatened by hunting and deforestation and so the park helps those affected. Park workers reach out to mahouts and their elephants in northern Thailand and teaches them how to keep their animals in good condition both in terms of health and well being. The park also has a reforestation plan with hopes to increase the coverage by 25 acres in the park.
BUILDINGS: We promote boutique hotels with efficient energy and waste disposal management. In this itinerary, the Hintok River Camp has a 100% natural spring water pool. This removes the need for chemicals to be added to the water and hence preserves the nearby environment.
ENERGY: Travelling overland in Thailand by bike is not only an environmentally friendly means of transport but also allows visitors to see authentic northern Thai villages and the surrounding countryside.
FRIENDS & NEIGHBOURS: We hire guides local to each region of Thailand and provide extensive training. We encourage visitors to interact as much as possible with their guides and to learn some basic Thai from a native speaker.
Visitors are also encouraged to opt for bed and breakfast options at hotels rather than half or full board so that they have the freedom to try food at local eateries and restaurants. Our activities are also designed to maximise authentic experiences with genuine interaction between locals and holidaymakers. Our three-day cycle tour in Kanchanaburi allows visitors to get off the beaten track and interact with villagers who would not otherwise meet foreign travellers. The Elephant Nature Park hires locals to work at the facility and also supports local economies by sourcing food from nearby communities.
TRAVELLING WITH RESPECT: Before departure, we provide visitors with detailed pre-arrival information about local customs and cultural norms. Tipping, begging and photography practices are also outlined.
