Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Burma cruise & adventure holiday

SUPPLIERS & BUILDINGS: Pandaw cruises prepare all meals on-board and almost 100% of their suppliers are sourced from local producers. The aim is to reduce the effect of ‘food miles’ and to benefit local communities with tourism. Local businesses work with the company to maintain the boats. The cruise focuses on many of the historic areas of Burma, both ancient and colonial. To this extent it promotes the preservation of heritage sites and supports local museums caring for historical artifacts.

WASTE & WATER: As a compact space, the Pandaw ship maximises the efficiency of energy flow and waste management. It follows strict environmental rules, self imposed, on fuel and water quality. Pandaw provides pro-ecological choices as much as possible in terms of the frequency of changing towels and linen. All laundry is done using biodegradable detergents. On-board, visitors are encouraged to relax in the breeze top deck to avoid using air conditioning in some rooms.

Pandaw cruises stop off a various local towns that would otherwise be very difficult to reach for tourists. This helps spread the benefits of tourism to more remote regions. Pandaw Cruises established The Pandaw charity following Cyclone Naris. The Pandaw ships were converted into floating hospitals working to help affected local communities. Since then the charity’s work has extended to include the construction of schools in Burma and there are 7 Pandaw Clinics providing 5,000 free treatments a month for local people. This is all sponsored by donations from passengers of the Pandaw cruises and from a profit share from Pandaw River Expeditions.

TRAVELLING WITH RESPECT: We empower our guests with thorough pre-departure information to prepare them for visiting Myanmar. This includes a country guide with information on local customs, cultural norms, tipping, begging, photography etiquette etc. Our in-country supplier has been trained at our company conference and knows our manifest: to promote local activities and restaurants wherever possible and design new authentic experiences for visitors. Guides in-country are also encouraged to get involved with clients and help them with any cultural questions.
