Responsible tourism: Family activity holiday in Turkey
Our local partners in Antalya are founding members of the Adras Tourism Association which aims to promote sustainable tourism in the local area. The association has been involved in successfully lobbying for re-planting of forests lost to forest fires and are currently working on a project to produce a map of walking and cycling trails in the area. The hotels in the area have an informal agreement to protect the turtles in the bay. The canyon used for the gorge walking has been rented out to an owner/occupier company who is contractually obliged to keep the gorge safe, clean and accessible. Activities provided during the trip such as walking, kayaking and rock climbing are free of fuel usage, transport, where required, is designed to minimise time and distance.
We only employ guides that live and work in the local area. They add the most value with their knowledge of history, flora, fauna and local culture. Local guides are key to being able to facilitate contact with local people during walks and excursions; such as being invited to drink tea by a shepherd or local farmer. Food is sourced locally and activities and equipment such as Kayaking and cycling are provided by local suppliers. Water sports are operated by two brothers from the village. We also include local restaurants and bars in the itinerary, such as the family run, traditional fish farm and restaurant, an excellent example of sustainable fish farming.
