Responsible tourism: Ethiopia walking holiday, The Simien mountains
Both ourselves and our local partner in Ethiopia are committed to conserving the environments that we visit. As such, our local partner is involved in several environmental projects such as tree planting and seed distribution. We believe that we are one of the most ecologically aware tour operators in Ethiopia and we take particular care to remove all signs of our presence particularly in the disposal of rubbish, local guides offer clients suggestions to help protect the environment, its vegetation and wildlife. Visitors often keep a record of animal and bird sightings to be published on the website for other travellers – making a positive contribution to the conservation of the wildlife in the locality. Walking tours are among the most environmentally friendly forms of travel, with much of the tour done on foot rather than through mechanised transport, we are able to keep the carbon footprint of the trip very low, as well as enhancing your trip by letting you become immersed in the sights, sounds and smells of the Simien Mountains that you would miss if you were to travel by car.
We are passionate about ensuring that our tours give back to the local communities that we visit. Therefore, we employ only local guides, ensuring valuable local knowledge of the area for our guests, and providing a valuable source of employment for the local communities, where the average household income has dropped significantly over the last ten years and a staggering 64% of people live below the poverty line. Our local guides, guards and cooks will accompany you for the duration of the trip, giving you the opportunity to learn from them about their culture, families, food, daily lives and social and environmental issues. Wherever possible, we like to keep things local, and the hotels and campsites used on this trip are run by local people, as are the restaurants, shops and markets that we recommend. For each booking, a donation is made to a local charity, ‘Link Ethiopia’, which links schools in the UK and Ethiopia, providing sponsorship programmes, a volunteer teaching scheme and training to schools in Ethiopia.
